Hi all, new user here who's in a spot of trouble -

I have had my bike impounded in Bristol for being a silly boy. I'm new to the area and don't have any contacts who can help me retrieve it.

The DVLA have had my license held hostage for over 10 months and I have no way of picking up the bike without insuraning someone with a full license.

I can't get to work without my vehicle. I only really use it for getting to and from work as I have to wake up at 3am most days and work 60 hour weeks.

If there's a good samaritan who might be able to help me here in Bristol - I'd be forever in your debt - I can throw you a bit of cash?

Erm, if you don't have a license and/or insurance surely you can't legally ride it to get to work anyway.

You could still have it picked you in a van even if you can't do that yourself surely?
Don't just leave it they will add outrageous storage charges.

You can't get it back from the impound lot without a suitable license and insurance. It's been seized by the filth.

I'm guessing it's been impounded for using it on the road with one of no tax or no insurance. In which case you'll get no sympathy here.

If it's just because the DVLA have your licence then section 88 of the Road traffic Act is your friend.
More info here (PDF download).

I'm not sure what sort of help you want?

If you want someone else to pick up your bike, that probably aint gonna fly because they'll want to see an insurance cert with that bike's reg on it - not some random bloke with a 'DoB' policy.

So what other help do you need? A lift to work? (Spoiler: I'm not getting up at 3am to do that Wink )

More details required. You're not by chance wrapped up with these characters are you?

Ah the famous part of the road traffic act that lets you operate a vehicle without a licence if you really really need to get to work Rolling Eyes

I hope you lose your job and starve to death.

That's very helpful. I sent my licence off for renewal a while back and I assumed* I could carry on riding/driving. Fuck knows how long the DVLA will take, hopefully less that 12 months Shocked

If it's not a particularly valuable bike you'd be better off asking them to crush or auction it as it doesn't sound like you'd be riding it any time soon anyway.

*and we all know what they say about assumptions.

I have a full license and my insurance allows me to ride other bikes
but I was under the impression the borrowed bike has to be insured by the owner as well as being taxed and MOT'd
A bike shop/dealer may have appropriate insurance & trade plates,
(a van even) that could collect it for you.

I used my van to collect one of my lads bike from the impound after it was stolen recovered.
At that time it was £120 recovery fee plus £20 a day storage
but I managed to haggle them down to just the £120 as I got there soon after it was picked up.

Why was it impounded in the first place?
no tax/mot/insurance sort of thing?

I’d be surprised if the OP comes back after all these replies.

Money’s on lost his licence previously and got busted riding it.

I'm attending the office on the 11th. It's in Filton. If the op likes I can swing by and point and laugh at him

Sort it out. There is a lack of good new boots on the market that have sat in stores for 2 years gathering dust and I'm blaming you.
