You could take such a picture at my local Tesco right now!*

*Not due to shortages, they're getting new fridges installed.

I'm pretty sure this is an early coronavirus "buy up all the toilet roll" pic.

I wasn't really referring to anything recent or specific. More that anti-socialist types love to point to what socialism might do, without considering what their lovely free markets are doing already.

I just find it bizarre how a lot of society has simply become progressively worse, year on year, for a bloody long time now, and STILL the only thing a lot of people can say is, "Yes but if we try anything different it will definitely be even worse!"

Bizarre.

Seems you're offended by whatever I wrote before.

It wasn't an attack on you. Just a statement that a lot of peoples' anti-socialist opinions are extremely contradictory, and that society has indeed gotten worse, yet nobody seems to be willing to even entertain the thought of any alternatives because apparently anything different from the current situation is always guaranteed to be even worse. It doesn't make any sense. Like I said - bizarre.

Also don't bother with the insults. My life, my 'dirt roads' and my POS bike are undoubtedly more enjoyable than whatever you've got going on for yourself right now... No need for ad hominems really.

Was the Attlee government socialist? That's not a rhetorical question. Many people would say yes, many would say no. They certainly nationalised a lot of things and presided over the creation of the NHS, built a lot of council houses, etc. But I don't know about them killing those they didn't like.

But is socialism in a democracy really socialism? Democracy implies to me freedom of individual choice, socialism does not. The two things seem incompatible. I think it is a different thing to have some principles based around social good, and true socialism. I contend that as long as you want democracy, you cannot be a socialist.

But to really get to the nub of the argument, first we have to agree on our definitions.

Hmm yeah point(s) taken. I'll admit I've never been overly clear on what, precisely, socialism is. I've tended to think of it as a milder form of communism - and therefore theoretically democratically controllable / accountable etc.

Well, the British taxpayer owns or owned:

- NHS
- Rail
- Telecoms
- Energy
- Police
- Education
- Land Registry
- Aviation Fuel network
- Road
- Post

And probably a load more but that's just the ones I know about off the top of my head.

As with all social/political things, there is never a clearly defined set of things that any given "-ism" must be, but public ownership of major assets is a huge tenet of socialism. And the UK has or had lots of it.

But yes, socialism is 100% always definitely a terrible bad thing and any country to ever touch it is doomed, utterly doomed!

What can i say? Maybe it's the fact that I'm ex-military, perhaps it makes my sense of humour different to that of others.

Lighten up and accept that you really, actually can't mould everyone into what you want them to be.

You see, when you're not invested in a particular political ideology, it's hard to get offended by politics. Political ideologies are too limiting.

If you came up this way, I'd let you buy me a pint! Laughing

Dignity, grace... these are not the words to describe this thread. How about we all just calm down a bit and bear in mind a "but he started it" finger pointing session will not resolve anything.

The politics of today (to resume the original thread subject) has become deeply polarised to the point apparently that ppl are losing friends and not talking to family due to political disagreements. Is this a new phenomenon? I'm pretty sure if you lived in '70s Liverpool and "came out" as a Tory your family would at least disown you Thinking

Well, the "red wall" crumbled, but I still don't think they'd class themselves as Tory. They're just not stupid. I reckon they feel the same way as me. The Tories were the best of the piles of shite available at the time. They won't go that way forever though if the Tories don't smarten up their act sharpish. But i don't think there's really any hope that the Tories will ever understand the electorate. I think the next general election will have a very poor turnout, unless Reform really gain ground. I can't see why they wouldn't at this stage tbh.

Because people on the whole are very conservative with a small c. The change between partys in power all over the western democracies is via a very small number of 'swing' voters. I can't ever seeing that changing. When you get something like the red wall collapsing it's because the party involved has gone so far outside the perameters the voters find acceptable they have to change. When they were doing the inteviews how many said 'I've voted Labour all my life but I can't vote for these'.

Even with all this sleeze and a buffoon in charge I will probably vote Tory again. Not because they are any good but because in my view Labour will lead the coubtry on a path of self destruction on so many levels. They aren't the Labour I was brought up with but many will still vote for them because they always have.

Libdems are a joke. Anything with British in the title is unelectable as racist. Greens, however sincere they are will bankrupt the country and make everyone paupers.

Politics is broken and anything is just papering over the cracks.
