I'm a little sick of the Cafe racer thing.
As I mentioned in another thread I am looking for a project bike.
And in my search I have come across COUNTLESS cafe racer bikes... or attempted conversions to a cafe racer type bike.
They are not nice to drive and I think they look crap. They are also doing it to bikes that I think should just be left as is.

For example. CBR 125 2008...
https://www.gumtree.com/p/honda-motorbikes/honda-cbr125r-2008-cafe-racer-style/1420740433
Why would you ruin a good looking 125cc?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/125029153567?hash=item1d1c517b1f:g:cUIAAOSw4tJhp4-x
A good cg125 2002 ruined. And he wants a premium for it. I think he is highly optimistic starting the bidding at £1500.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284522438320?hash=item423edbdeb0:g:JiMAAOSwnjJgssM8
XJ600 ruined.

What annoys me is there are not a lot of cheap project bikes out there and a lot of good bikes are just being ruined.

None of those bikes were particularly good to begin with. The best of the three is probably the CBR but it's clear it's just been pre-crashed and it's an excuse to rip the fairing off. The CG is good transport but a very uninspiring bike, and the XJ is just motorcycling beige. It's the plain toast of motorcycling. The pizza with no topping. The "I'll just have a still water" of motorcycling. If someone has made something out of it then good, sort of?

I'm no fan of the cafe 'craze' (although it's still better than 'brat' or 'scrambler' bikes) but these three examples are not the worst. IMO of course.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

What sort of project bike are you looking for, and what do you plan on doing with it?

It's good to get that bit nailed down, rather than just looking for something cheap to turn into a project. Lots of people have been stuck at home with too much time and money on their hands for nearly two years now, so knackered old bikes to turn into projects are thin on the ground and expensive.

However, quite a few of those projects are now showing up as unfinished projects. So if someone was going in the same direction as you, you may be best off picking up their unfinished project.

Factor in also that the POS has no MOT because "I not got time". You had time to turn a perfectly serviceable bike into a hideous and totally inappropriate cafe racer though, didn't you? Twat.

Ain't nobody got time fo' dat.

There must be something therapeutic about an impact wrench. Seen so many unfinished projects on the bay recently, where someone has simply dismantled a bike, and then decided to call it quits and get rid. No time! Where does all the time go?

What I find silly is the prices they want for some of the stuff they ruined.
I got £500 for a fully working Toyota Corolla with no rust and a valid mot.
He wants £400 for that. Which will no doubt be missing multiple fittings and bolts. Will likely have issues in the engine beyond what he said. Likely someone tried to fix it and made it worse so gave up on it.

Honestly unless you have that exact bike and are looking for parts that stuff should be sold separately or just scrapped lol.

There's a lot worse out there.. take a look at ebay's mots miserable bike thread..

I bought an XJ550 in a similar state to the GSX550 mentioned, - bits missing seized motor (although that was partly my fault) and got it back together for about another 500 quid on top of the £125 I paid and I was being very cheap, Once you factor in new battery, chain, sprockets, tyres, pistons rings (sometings) suspension refurb, brake refurb, you can be well into a 1000 or more.

On the upside, I have been enjoying the endless stream of cheap xj600 parts from a lot of these 'customs' that have kept mine getting closer to 100k on it.

There is absolutely nothing aesthetically pleasing or classic about the bikes frame though, they all end up looking much worse than they started. Very little of them seem to be in the spirit of a cafe racer either in actually trying to hot the bike up handling or performance wise. For the same money he spent on that divvy, im sure he could have fit the fzr/r6 front end, bit of machine work to fit a R6 shock and bigger carbs and make it semi- interesting and a bit faster.

There are plenty of c90's in boxes or half finished states out for there still fairly cheap if you wanted a easy and fairly quickly achievable project.

I think the equivalent now would be a YBR. Plenty about in various states of ruin, loads of parts, simple (presumably) to work on, reliable but unloved generally. I've considered getting one to strip completely to pieces so I can teach the stepson some practical skills (and for my own amusement).

Even YBR's are suffering from the cafe racer scourge....
Very Happy

I'm not sure what's worse. The cafe racers or the streetfighters that were so abundant before.

Love how they've taken the time to make sure all the accent colours don't match Laughing

What annoys me more is the price and that it is listed as a spares and repairs project.
When I got my YBR it was about £700 and fully working with MOT and 10k miles.
prices now are just stupid.

You can still get them for about that money. Not if it's a "no expense spared custom retro with clip ons and pod filter" though obviously. Very Happy
