the electric (plug-in) vehicle grant for 2w has changed from this morning, and 2 wheelers get shafted as usual

L1 moped class LEV now reduced from 20%, to 35% with a £150 limit

L3 motorcycles class, reduced from 20% to 35% with a £500 limit

so that £4000 LEV off a £20k Zero will now be reduced to £500

even less likely to buy one than before, which was pretty much not at all

It's pretty obvious at this point the government wants bikes off the roads. Gotta help out large companies developing self-driving cars...

Problem solved. Cool

Interesting approach, increasing the percentage but capping the total amount of grant. Also only applicable to bikes worth £10k or less.

So if a theoretic 125-equivant bike cost £1500, the grant would knock off £500. On the previous 20% system it would have knocked off £300.

Of course, there are no electric bikes for £1500, and won't be for a while. Prices seem to start north of 5 grand for something like a super soco, and north of 10 grand for something worth riding.

So it looks the change is to incentivise cheap, slow electric bikes that don't exist yet.

I'd rather people went down the EV route than this.

As we all already know, classic bikes and classic cars demand a lot of care, maturity and responsibility to keep them maintained and roadworthy. They're untaxed because they're hardly ever used, so their emissions are extremely low. And bikes, in particular, demand a hefty dose of common sense: don't use a low gear in densely populated area, plan your braking, don't make obvious and obnoxious modifications, etc. It won't take much for the historic exemption to be regarded as a loophole that needs to be closed up. I hope they stay hobby/enthusiast machines and aren't seriously seen as a cheap means of commuting into cities. There isn't actually much wrong with trains and buses.

Ah but we're talking about now- not the future. Make the most of what you can, when you can Smile
