Right as a rule im unsure if i actually want to do this.

So my 04 blackbird has just started to cut out during riding in the last few days.
Weve narrowed it down to the wires leading into the ignition barrel and having a quick browse around the guess is that the connections into the barrel may have come lose/disconnected.

As im an all year rider and work/ ride down some hellish uk farm tracks my bird is slowly migrating the way of the rat. So im wondering how to go about bypassing the ignition barrel and fitting a switch instead.

Reasons being, i can access the loom wiring to the barrel easy enough but getting to the underside of the barrel is fairly difficult. And the amount of crap that gets flung between my forks and onto my radiator is horrendous.

The HISS system shouldnt be too much of an issue as its not like i dont have the keys to hand and it looks like that sensors wires come in much higher up the barrel and dont seem to have suffered any corrosion

Commonly it`s a solid red wire from the battery and a red with a black chaser to the fuse box, it may switch live to the cooling fan and maybe parking lights?
I will pass on the h.i.s.s system but it will involve info to the e.c.u.

Also the bird brings back memories and is not suitable for shit road surfaces.
Why are you using an old bike when you are working for a living?

Bit low tech but could you cheer up the connections (e.g. a dab with a soldering iron) and then go nuts with a glue gun and seal stuff in?

Old? The bird was the newest plate bike ive ever owned when i got him 5 year back? Been the most stable bike ive owned on ice & snow... thats not saying much i know lol

Full time, bottom of the barrel farm hand. Im barely above the wage line here.

Ultimately I think its easier to just try and clean up the connections and hot glue than to mess around trying to bypass HSS.

My thinking is, i shouldnt have to bypass the HISS itself. The sensor unit, and its wires are attatched at the top of the barrel. The fault seems to be the connection at the bottom of the barrel.

Bypassing the 'turn on/off' on the barrel via a installed switch,
While still sliding the key into the ignition for the sensor to pick up.
...

I will have a look at cleaning up the contacts, they just look an arse to get at, while the loom leading into them is incredibly accessible for me

Get a pattern ignition lock and cable tie it to the yoke/stanchion? Plug'n'play.

I'd heard of HISS but never had a play with it so had to google it
OK, so my breif read up tells me its basically an RFID chipped key which
when it comes in the field of the HISS transciever, emits a code to allow the bike to run.
A pretty common system in many cars

This in effect relys on two codes to allow function.
One is the key code in the way it's cut to mechanically switch on power
Two is the RFID code to electronically allow sparks n shit

I have worked on bikes with aftermarket immobilisers where the above are seperate
and dont see why (in theory) you couldn't downgrade the combined HISS system to seperates
where the coded key is changed to a simple on/off switch.

In practise is where you have to think about the method
the switch can be anywhere, but the chip must be within the RF field to pass the code

Seems straightforward enough, if money's no object we can start tomorrow

It is straightforward enough. There's nothing special about the ignition lock, it's just a switch like any other. There is a chip in the key and an RFID antenna mounted round the outside of the ignition lock.

The simplest way to do this would be to get a pattern ignition lock, fit it and swap the chip from the original key. OR buy a pattern ignition lock, dismantle it and rearrange the wafers so the original key fits.

You could also fit a new ignition lock, have a chipped key cut for it then register the new chip to your HISS system, a procedure which is relatively straightforward and requires two flying leads with a croc clip on one end and a terminal on the other and a 100k resistor. The procedure is well documented and simple. I did it so we had spare keys for Mrs stinkwheels CBR6.

But the OP does not want to replace the ignition barrel, he wants to bodge the wiring. Hence my suggestion of simply bodging a pattern ignition switch in without actually fitting it to the dash, then it'll just connect to the block connectors and when he decides to stop being so lazy, he can fit it properly.

It'll still need the original key in the original ignition to activate the RFID but the original ignition switch will be disconnected.

Incidentally, I'm pretty sure the actual ignition switch has three wires a red, a black on red and a yellow on blue. They are literally connected together when the ignition is on with the red being the unswitched live. So you could have any old 2-position switch with the red on one side and the other two wires on the other and it would do the same as the ignition switch. You'd still need the original key in the ignition lock so the HISS works, I'd suggest turning it on so the key can't come out if you go over a bump.

Or more fun would be to relocate the HISS antenna somewhere else and put the chip in something random. Then you can have a bike where you can turn the ignition on with a toggle switch but which won't run without it's teddy bear on the pillion seat.
