Seen in another forum. Doesn't affect me fortunately, but FFS...

I didn't know this could happen in the UK?

Yup, I just got the email as I have both my bikes insured with MCE. Extremely vexing as I was paid in full until September and the process for claiming back the refund for unused months looks like an absolute pain. I use my bikes for work so I have to sort something annoyingly.

I imagine a whole lot of people who don't read their emails regularly are about to get done it on Feb 1 when they get caught riding without insurance. :/

Surely the insurance company would have to at a minimum snail mail people? Relying on emails is insane. Mine dumps random shit in my junk mail and I check that about once a week.

I'm not & never have been a customer of them, but yeah . . . This is going to affect a lot of my mates.

In our rag tag gang of rogues, vagabonds & ne'er do well'ers we have a genuine bonafide £400ph Barrister, who is strangely incommunicado at the mo'. Not that he's ever given his services freely before, but mates are mates & when they need help . . . !

Is one of the more mature & sensible bike journalists on the case?

My first thoughts are the cost of any policy should be reimbursed by the card/payment provider, but the thought of the 1000's out there who will be riding blissfully unaware they aren't insewered fills me with dread.

Did you pay on credit card? You'd likely have some fallback there too.

My insurance companies (car and bike) both say they'll only communicate via email or they'll charge you more*

* won't give you a discount.

Yeah me and a mate got that email last night.

I initially thought they'd be covering existing polices until they lapsed.

This page has a bit of info on what happens. Almost makes it sound like they handle everything for you though??

https://www.fscs.org.uk/making-a-claim/claims-process/failed-ins-co-next/

If there is no suitable insurer to replace the failed insurance firm’s policies – perhaps because they sold a complex range of policies – FSCS can pay eligible policyholders a partial refund of their insurance policy premium, which can help with arranging new cover on their own.

What will be interesting is seeing if MCE the intermediary decide to charge fees to replace business with their new chosen provider (Sabre) - that will be hilarious.

I think it's the MCE Gibraltar based underwriter that's gone bust. The broker MCE Is still going, but I can't see this doing them any favours.

It's as Marjay sets out - the underwriter which is MCE Gibraltar went into administration, blamed on the inability to meet Solvency II requirements (they would have to hold more capital to cover reserves and investors saw diminished returns).

Sabre were in the background trying to essentially bulk transfer the book, as they have the required capital aligned. But in the end this didn't happen, most likely because Sabre decided they could just take the book anyway, at more favourable terms.

I paid in-full and up-front for both my 125cc and kwak policies with MCE, now just seen an e-mail today that both policies are being cancelled on 31st Jan and that if I want my money back for unused months then I need to apply for compensation for the FSCS and that looks like a fucking massive pain.

It's been more than 120 days since I started both policies so I can't even use the VISA or Mastercard reversal.

Also what happens to my NCB with them? They never sent me any documents stating my NCB when I renewed with them.

Cunts.

You would fall into a pool of tits and come up sucking your thumb, wouldn't you Doh!

NCD should be on the renewal schedule / invite documentation. Unfortunately, with the policy being cancelled from 31/1 and not completing the full year you'll be losing whatever period from renewal to that date in NCD terms - only full years count.

Bumclouds, eh.

They had that cunt Big Ed in their adverts. I'm glad they've gone bust and have zero sympathy for anyone who uses them.

Friend of mine from down London is insured with them and he just told me that MCE didn't let you pay by Direct Debit recently and used CPA (Continuous Payment Authority) on cards instead so that you can't get your money back using the Direct Debit Guarantee.

He said he used his credit card for monthly payments and can get it back but I think that's sly as fuck on MCE's part. I guess anyone reading this if they did monthly payments on their Debit Card should try to claw back the last three months (120 days) of payments and cancel the CPA that MCE has on your card to stop them taking another payment.

Was MCE infamous as a shite insurer? I literally went with them because they were the cheapest Sad

So did everyone who used them. They were stupidly cheaper than anyone else for me but luckily at the moment I have taken my bike off road and my insurance has lapsed so they don't owe me. Covid is useful for something.

If you're yet to attain full NCD, or especially if you're in the first few years of riding, this will be a pain too, depending on how accommodating subsequent insurers are. In the past, insurers have typically only registered whole years with them as NCD qualifiable. Exceptions might be made in these circumstances though.

It's a bit rubbish though.

Since I need to insure both my bikes again, does anyone know of a decent insurer that does multibike policies?

If you are fully comp I'd be tempted to fuck them in the arse with your busted bike whilst you have the chance.

The best time to kick someone is when they are down and can't fight back.

Won't that fuck me in the long term though by having a claim on my file with the MID?

MID is irrelevant, but insurers will know you've had a claim, and you'll be legally required to declare it. Meh, you've been riding for a tiny amount of time. Depends if you want your bike fixed or not I guess?
