The $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope will be launching on xmas day. The most expensive launch ever.

As long as it doesn't get into orbit and they find they got imperial and metric dimensions mixed up, meaning a second mission to fit a pair of glasses to it like they did with the Hubble.

Not an option this time round, it isn't even going to orbit the earth, will sit out at the L2 point, keeping the earth between itself and the sun.

So I really hope they didn't fuck anything up, because there's a lot that could go wrong and I want to see the pictures.

They'll have tested the fuck out of it and then tested it again - especially the mirror Laughing

It's an interesting project. It doesn't actually sit at the Lagrange point, it goes round it in a halo/Lissajous orbit. It has a huge 5 layer heatshield to protect it not only from the Sun's light and heat but also from that of the Earth and the Moon and it operates mostly in the infrared. It should also be able to look further back than the Hubble did with it's wide field image.

Can't wait to see some images and data from it. Thumbs Up

They ground the mirror (and the spare) to a very accurate degree. Even including the spherical error. Laughing

It looks like they're having problems. The sunshield layer tensioning was originally programmed to be complete by day 9 and is now to be determined. All of the subsequent stages are the same.

Let's hope they can resolve whatever the issues are.

The first sunshield membrane has been successfully tensioned. Thumbs Up

2 & 3 tomorrow and then 4 & 5 on Wednesday. The same motors tension all of the membranes so things should hopefully go well. Very Happy

I thought the Hubble mirror was ground incorrectly due to an equipment assembly problem. The famous metric/imperial issue was the Mars Climate Orbiter.

It was a failure of the measuring equipment during final profiling and polishing that introduced the spherical error.

Oh and a failure to actually test the profile before they mounted it - they could even have discovered it right up to launch as they had a spare ground to exactly the same profile... Laughing
