Gilera DNA wont start

Hi I have a Gilera DNA 50 and it wont start. Ive tried carb cleaner and a few other things ive seen on other forums. can anybody help?

Hi, not familiar with your bike.
Are you using electric or kick start?
Has the bike got any safety cut out switches preventing a spark?
Has it a spark?
Is the battery nearly flat?

ive tried starting on the button and kickstart but got a new battery and still wont go. spark plug seems to be okay too.

Well if it has a good spark at the plug and you have tried oil spray direct into the carb inlet, (air filter removed) has somebody blocked the end of the exhaust?
When was the last time this bike was used?

You’ve given us nothing to go on. What other things have you already tried?
Full tank?
Fuses ok?
Battery fully charged?
What makes you say the spark plug is ok?
Recent bike history?
When did it last run?
Is the bike new to you?
Does the engine spin on the starter?
Do the lights work?

sorry ill give a bit more info:
bike was ridden about 2 weeks ago and before that it had sat for around 3 months. theres plenty of fuel in tank and fuses are all okay. took spark plug out and it wasnt too black on the end. there was fuel leaking out of the line where it attaches to the carb but that has been fixed now. thank you for the help too.

Start pulling electrical connectors apart and clean up any corrosion inside. After attempting to start does the exhaust smell of fresh fuel?

Tom, can you see the spark plug SPARKING??????????

1) Remove the HT lead from the spark plug
2) Remove the spark plug from the engine
3) Re-attach the HT lead to the spark plug
4) Hold the spark plug by the insulated HT cap, and hold the bottom of the plug against a metal part of the engine casing/cylinder
5) Crank the bike and look for a spark

Is it sparking? If yes then the ignition circuit is okay. Is it not sparking? There is a fault with the ignition circuit. Replace the plug with a new one and try again. Still not sparking? Start working your way through the electrics, starting at the grounding points on the frame, remove the connections, sand them back to metal to get rid of any corrosion and replace. Pull apart connectors and clean them out, then pull apart and re-insert them a few times to clear off any corrosion.

If it is sparking, and the ignition circuit is okay, then it could be down to the carburettor being gummed up with old fuel. You need to strip the carb down slightly be removing the float bowl, removing the jets and cleaning out the jets and carburettor with carb cleaner (don't push anything like wire through them). If you're not confident doing this (carbs are quite intricate things) then get somebody who knows what they're doing to look at it.

Once you've done the above, come back to us with details of what happened at each stage and if it hasn't worked we'll come up with the next steps.

If it was running two weeks ago don't touch the carbs, they won't be gummed up or at fault, unless you have been tweaking screws!! Be honest at what you have done as we need to know to help you. We have all done stupid things in the past so don't worry. There will only be a bit of piss taking.

Edited to add, my youngest daughter learnt to ride on one of those. She absolutly loved it.

yeah i havent changed anything on the bike but previous owner did as it it seems to rev really high (around 5000rpm) before it moves and then it never really gets past 7 thousand.

just put a new spark plug in and jump started the bike and it was running for a minute or two then cut out. now when i pull the brake in to press the starter button the dashboard turns off. the petrol light and oil light flash on and off but it has fuel and oil.

I'm inclined to think the battery is flat. There could be an issue with the charging side as well.

its a brand new battery so i dont think its that. I tried sucking the vacuum line and theres no fuel coming through still. disconnected fuel line and vacuum line turned ignition on kickstarted by hand while sucking vacuum tube but no fuel came through the line. theres also air bubbles in the fuel line.

Sorry, I hadn’t answered all of the questions from Kawasaki. I’m not sure what you mean about ‘does the engine spin on the starter?’
Also, because I had a full tank of fuel and it started when I first put in the new spark plug, I hadn’t thought the fuel was a problem. It did cut out a few minutes after it started after replacing the spark plug though. Also, the lights do work.

'Spin on the starter' means 'does the engine turn over and try and start when you do it or is there just a clicking sound'

In your case it does not, which is same as a dry spark plug.

Ah, ok. In answer to that, sometimes it will try to start and sometimes it makes a clicking sound. Thanks for your patience, hopefully one day I’ll be answering questions instead of asking them!
