Highway Code: 'Dutch reach' rule change to Highway Code welcomed

Quote:
A method known as the "Dutch reach" is to be introduced to the Highway Code in the UK after years of campaigning.

The practice is used widely across Europe and encourages people to open vehicle doors with their opposite hand to avoid injuries to passing cyclists.

Jeez, couldn't they come up with a better name? How many clips for that, ste?! Laughing

TBH I've started peeking backwards opening a car door since getting a motorbike but yet again here's a Highway Code change for cyclists that somewhat helps us too.

Why with the "opposite hand"?
You mean you didn't used to look behind before opening your car door when parked on a road or other place where traffic might be coming from behind? Seems like common sense to me.
Am I missing something...again? Laughing

Wouldn't be quite so bad if the TdT weren't doing 40mph in lycra 2 inches away from the line of parked cars .....

And if people just looked over their shoulder etc

Or the bikes had bells, instead of just bell ends.

Door opening - bell ringing.

Instead of door open and bellend cursing Very Happy

If you use your left hand to open the ddrivers door your already turning your body so your head is halfway to looking back.

Hmmm. Doesn't mean you're actually taking a look behind. Why not just get into the habit of actually looking behind before opening the door? I'm worried about losing my door, which is motivation enough!

I've had a weird method of opening the door since I started driving ..... What I do is LOOK IN THE FUCKING WING MIRROR before opening the door. Mostly cos I don't want some cvnting bike wanker twatting into my door and damaging it.

I can just see that in ‘The Code”…
Rule 171
Be sure to LOOK IN THE FUCKING WING MIRROR before opening the door of your vehicle so that you might avoid some cvnting bike wanker twatting into your door

It's already an offence to open a door into the path of moving traffic. Why do they need a special rule for cyclists?

It's for the benefit of motorcyclists as much as it's for the benefit of cyclists. Wink

And it's not a rule anyway.

The 'Dutch leg over' is for when you're parked next to the kerb, checking what's flying down the road from behind before cocking your leg over the seat.

Riding 101. You'd not catch me riding within door opening range and jf it is that narrow I slow right down.

Trust no one.

It's the blind U turners I'm more worried about.

Slow right down? Confused

I'm not slowing down on my bicycle unless I absolutely have to. Mr. Green

I take it this is a different Dutch reach to the one I experienced in 1986 under the table of a night club in Amsterdam (the Limelight - if anyone remembers it)..?

Yes, opening a door into danger has been a statuatory construction and use offence since 1986*.

Not using a "Dutch reach" isn't an offence. Using one isn't a defence.

*section 105, The Roads Vehicles (Constructions and Use) Regulations 1986

"No person shall open, or cause or permit to be opened, any door of a vehicle on a road so as to injure or endanger any person."

It's part of Dutch learner driver training. Must be true, Sandi Toksvig said so on QI.

Replace reach with rudder and you'll find something.

A Portuguese wank as first explained to me as a naive cadet on my first ship....

Start off with one hand while sitting on the other. When you get pins and needles in the hand you are sitting on, swap hands and it feels like someone else is doing it to you.

And no, I never tried it. Embarassed

I also have no idea why Portuguese, maybe Vasco da Gama invented it!.
