The extinction of Bikes/Speed Limiters!!

Dont ask me where i picked this up from, but the word is that in a few years (5-10) motorbikes could be illegal due to pollution laws, also would any one ride a bike with a speed limiter on it?

I for one wouldnt, it takes away the whole purpose of riding.

I had a limiter on my Gixxer750. Stopped the revs at 118mph. Soon had that removed.

Limiters are just thinly a disguised attempt to appease all the whiny types. Nobody keeps 'em.

I'd have thought that Cars, lorries, trains and other larger capacity machines would be the first for the chop if pollution fears grew anymore.

I can see that bikes will be a better option for people to use everyday before much longer. Especially with the amount of traffic on the roads.

Lots of bikes already have speed limiters fitted, limited to 186mph so not much of a problem. As it is just electrical it is very easy to get a simple cheap thing you plug in which removes it.

Current bikes are really bad for pollution (a 2 stroke scooter produces more polution than a modern bus by a substantial amount), but that will change but just adds to the cost of bike.

Speed limiters are probably more likely. Probably start out at a speed regarded as high (say 120mph) and being compulsory, and then get wound down towards the speed limit. However more likely is that there will be some kind of GPS limiter which will limit the bike to the speed limit on that road. However the guy doing the research on these limiters on cars has no interest in investigating their use on bikes as he thinks bikes should be and will be banned.

This was an issue I warned of in a smoking ban thread. With the event of cars like the smart car its going to be very hard to justify the need to ride a bike.

No but neither does the other 40 million or so of the population. I think that could be a good argument, IE number of people in towns/cities. However if everyone drove smart cars, owing to their size that would mean kilometers less car length to cater for parking wise while people work.

But it's even less for bikes, and cheap bikes are more accessible for people on low incomes - the issue of "tackling social exclusion" is something you'll see the BMF et al using when taking to Government at all levels.

Big load of arse tbh, theres roumours all the time, from papers, government "leaks" and commitie suggestions all suddenly become a 100% defenate law OMFG TEH BIKES WILL BE BANNED!

Bikes (as far as i know) are MORE efficient at high revs than low, so restricting them makes no sense...

Bevery carefull believeing everything your read or your mate from work tells you...

I would guess that this chap isn't referring to individual limiters, but is actually talking about the very real EVSC proposals, the viability of which is currently being researched at considerable expense in Leeds. I don't think it's stretching it too far to say that this is a very real threat to what we do.
