The miserable bikes of ebay thread is mostly badly done cafe racers - I'm wondering how people would like to see them done. Common complaints are poor workmanship, stupid ergos, "mods" that make the bike handle worse, and amazon special / ali express parts.

I just picked up a cheap 80s beater bike of the type that normally gets cafed. I do want to smarten it up a bit and make it nicer (it's very rough looking) without going full bike shed and putting clipons on a bike that clearly isn't designed for them.

Where could I look for good quality aftermarket parts that aren't ali express cheap nasty bits?

What bike is it?

If it has clip-ons, it should have rearsets. It should have mudguards. It should have a means of preventing cack getting sucked into the carbs. it should have tyres that grip as well as look good. It shouldn't have structural frame parts lopped off with an angle grinder. It shouldn't have the forks slammed.

Your classic cafe racer is an air-cooled brit like a T140 triumph with clip-ons, rearsets, an alloy tank and a single seat unit.

Here's a nice modern-ish take on a cafe racer VFR750 I saw a picture of recently.

Sorry, but the idea of any VFR being hacked into a Cafe Racer, no matter how well executed, to me is travesty. Sad

Like Sanctuary AC. Every single one I've seen is a work of art, and everyone else should just stop. https://www.ac-sanctuary.co.jp/

I always fancied doing something like this, it's from the 70s and looks like it - I did even look at a couple of 400/4s to do an homage but now my garage is full of other things

Then blow the same again on bolt-on aftermarket parts:

Just a Yammy SR250. Going for brat / street tracker rather than actual "cafe". Very much going for this sort of look

https://www.autofabrica.com/type-3

Just bought a new tank. Will get that fitted first then I might see about some nicer levers / switch gear. Wondering what nice, good quality switch gear I can find, instead of Ali Express shite.

You wont find anything better functionally than original Japanese switchgear. I'd take a used, 20 year old honda handlebar switch over any new aftermarket one you care to mention.

C90 switchgear looks cool. Is alloy. They also use a "hidden" throttle cable if you get that bit too.

Mate, that is exactly 'the full BIke Shed' complete with brown seat, ridiculous knobblies and no mudguards. In fact this is the quintessence of what most people on here despise and find 'miserable' - it is a triumph of form over function. While skinny jeaned grease-beards at 'The shed' might cream their calvins over that kind of travesty, the rest of us will reserve the right to ignore you... probably

Ok. The bike that gave rise to the trend in brat choppers was from the film The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

This bike:

It's an old K-series CB350 which were pretty quick bikes. I'd imagine you could make an SR250 look pretty similar without a lot of work.

NIce, but that's a worlds away form the linked bike. It has mudguards,TLS brake, a black seat (in keeping of the era), and one decent tyre, at least ..

You will also notice the exhaust wrap is there purely to stop you burning your leg on the high level pipes .
