Oh the irony of a ferry business foundering:

P&O Ferries sacks 800 workers but crew refuse to leave ships

Very harsh unceremoniously dumping [a large chunk of] your entire workforce but the RMT decrying the use of "foreign" agency workers? Some sort of racism surely!

800 out of 2200 isn't all your entire workforce but your point does stand.

I'm sure the RMT view theirs as the only "true" workers Wink But fair enough...

"“We are receiving reports that security guards at Dover are seeking to board ships with handcuffs to remove crew so they can be replaced with cheaper labour."

(RMT pages)

It's illegal to use handcuffs on anyone unless by police.
It's governed by international laws too.

If it was easy as that then squatting would be a thing.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/use-of-handcuffs-by-security-personnel/the-sias-view-on-the-use-of-handcuffs

"There is no law in the UK that prevents civilians carrying handcuffs. SIA licensed security operatives have no legal powers over and above other civilians. Anyone who does carry handcuffs should be aware that their use could constitute a crime, unless they can show that using them was reasonable and proportionate in the circumstances."

I put this on the same page as when McDonalds workers were demanding £15 an hour - it's a quick way to get yourself replaced with an iPad. Just in this case the McDonalds workers are Unionised P&O workers and the iPads are South-East Asians.

Maritime industry is awash with the unwashed.

They run the world's cargo.

Flips and Jinglies.

That's the globalists for you. This is why they don't want borders, they want all the worker bees in one pot together.

Probably as simple as P&O not doing very well then Covid hits and their clientele all stay home for 2 years. In the mean time staff still need paying and the beancounters are shitting themselves over the pensions.

Would that be the bean counters sifting through $26.5Bn of DP World assets?

If one pours money into a continually loss making venture you going from "business" to "charity." They probably wanted to sink the company a year ago but didn't want to look mean and petty Laughing

As the positions are still there and will be filled with cheaper people, this doesn't actually meet the definition of 'redundant'.

The trouble is, I suspect P&O have crunched the numbers for redundancy payments AND unfair dismissal and have worked out it's cheaper in the long term....

Because they think they can buy themselves out of the legal necessities and it will save themselves money in the long term.

Expect the pension pot for previous employees to be plundered next if they get away with this.

Unless we (the people) stay at home and don’t travel, we need ferries and air travel to go international.
Whoever crews these boats , we need them.

I should think the atmosphere on a P&O ferry would not be good when they start sailing again Confused .

I feel for the crews that have been dismissed, what a shitty way to lose your job.
I like a ferry trip if I’m going to the Continent.
I think I’ll try and use another company if/when I next go to Holland or Germany.

Most of the UK boats are registered in Cyprus.

Having just had a look at the regulations iN Cyrus they are even more painfull than the ones in the UK. P&O can try and state they aren't based in the UK but if they want to play that game they are on a hiding to nothing.

The total number of employees and the description of employees normally employed at the establishment.
The time period during which the proposed redundancies are to take place.
The criteria for selecting the employees to be dismissed.

I particularly like this bit
