While I got a Cushman Scooter when I was 13 ($50), I also came by a Harley that year. In those days (I'm 82 now), the carnivals had big board lined drums about 30 or 40 ft or so in diameter that motorcycles raced around, rising all the way to the top out of centrifugal force. The feature was called "The Wall of Death." One day I was exploring the woods behind the area a carnival had been a few days before. I came upon an old Harley board track racer that had been abandoned back there probably due to a thrown rod or something. I pushed it a half mile home and put it in my basement which fortunately had an outside entrance. During the next month or so I started taking it apart out of curiosity. The years have faded how far I got, or what I ended up doing with it. It was a memorable experience though.

My first bona-fide motorcycle was an indian Brave 250cc flathead at age 16. Since that time I have owned everything from a Vincent Black Shadow to a Honda CBX 6 cyl. - probably thirty or more. I sold my most recent bike, a 1,200 cc Sportster last year. Lately, I've been keeping my hand in the hobby by cutting out 19" motorcycle replicas on my homemade CNC plasma cutter.

Here is a 1953 photo of me on my Cushman:

Sarah and zannia were my early rides. Much better than any bike I've ever ridden.
Hana was a good ride as well. As was hannah.....

My first was a Mobylette 'liberated' from a shed at my school when I was way too young. My second was a Raleigh Runabout bought for a couple of quid from a mate when I was 14 and accidently torched. My next was my sister's Honda Express which I buggered by taking the exhaust off on a tree-stump. My next was my sister's Fs1e which I crashed into a tree and banana'd the forks. After that was a part-share in a CD175. I don't recall being responsible for its death, but I do remember it having no baffles and being chased repeatedly from wherever we'd ride it due to the noise.... Then came my legal bikes....

Hmm, right where to start..

Dad bought a Honda S90 from a bloke in the pub for a tenner but no float needle - in 1978 I had no clue where to buy one of those, or even how to fit it so we never got it running. My mate a couple of years older bought it - he was smarter than I and got it going. We rode (illegally) up the village roads to a disused railway and run amok up there. Then came a BSA Bantam that had been 'modified' into a trail bike (knobblies and high mudguards) - we broke the frame on that jumping it - no idea what became of it. I then bought my rusty Fizz aged 14 from a bloke down the road who had used it as a commuter - 80 quid (JMJ 253N). Polished it up ready for legal road use but had a couple of spills before that..
Also around that time my Dad found another bargain - a Greeves Hawkstone kind of thing - 25 quid. It was a fearsome beast and frightened me greatly. I couldn't ride it properly at 13/14 and could only just start it - it was really for my older bro.. Nevertheless I borrowed it one day headed for a field and hit the only thing in the field - a bloody great chisel plough. I bent the forks and shat myself awaiting big bro's wrath...
