Hi All!

The summer is coming and I'm moving into Liverpool, I'm 24 and I wanted to get a nice bike just to commute in around the city and occasionally maybe go to Manchester, I want something that looks nice and is also fun to drive.

I probably wont be driving the bike in the winter so I wouldn't want to spend more than 1k on getting a bike as I'm saving up for a car.

Where do I start and what do I do bearing in mind I have 0 previous bike experience.

Thanks!

How optimistic are you of you still having it a week after you arrive?

Pretty optimistic! I live in a good area and I can park it safely.

A grand doesn't buy you much these days. There are 40 125s listed on AutoTrader for under £1000. The majority are scooters or Chinese.

Have you factored in the cost of insurance, bike gear, security, consumables? You'll most likely need to spend a little money on all or those as well as the purchase cost of the bike itself.

I think you either need to up your budget or lower your expectations.

a grand'll get you f*** all - but you'll already know that because you'll have spent two minutes glancing at eBay....won't you?

Is that just for the bike, or everything?

By the time you've bought CBT, helmet, insurance, gloves, boots, chain and gear you won't have much of that left!

Even if that's £1000 just for the bike, that still won't stretch to much.

You might get a rough YBR if you are very lucky - otherwise, something Chinese.

Buy a pushbike, it’ll get you around the city, you can take it on the train to Manchester and you won’t need £500 of protective kit.

Interesting isn't it; I cycle quite a lot and have been very fast, but I consider a helmet and fingerless gloves to be "sufficient" protective kit. Yet I wouldn't ride my motorbike,
I wouldn't fancy cycling in Kevlar jeans though.

OP; pretty clear pattern of responses here! £1000 will get you a pretty basic bike. Budget £500 to get helmet/boots/trousers/jacket/gloves. Security is optional I guess, but if you have even a remote interest in keeping hold of what you buy, that's at least another couple of hundred gone.

Riding from Liverpool to Manchester avoiding motorways is a bit tedious (and you will have to avoid them while on a CBT as I expect you know). Once you get here, grow eyes in the back of your helmet as there are plenty of scrotes around here now that'll happily liberate you of any bike (including while you're riding it).

Any Japanese 125 would do me. Maybe cost 1200 for a decent one then the cost of all the gear on top.

Biking is great fun I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Next year you'll be asking in here whether to go for a Fireblade or R1 Laughing

He'll be back. Once he blows up his sub-1000 quid chinese 125, he'll probably come back for advice on how to turn it into a brat bike. Or maybe he will log on to promote some new youtube videos. Wink

Unsure how often you ride into pointed objects... but I've never found the road or most furniture to be sharp.

/s

Tbf, I bought a £30 lid in 2012 which I stopped using last year when I stopped riding. Don't crash, best idea.

Sounds good value assuming it fits well, but how can it have different safety ratings left to right? I'd have thought most components of a helmet would be symmetrical?

Yeah, I could kind of understand it if was slightly asymmetrical in construction - because of something like a sunvisor mechanism on one side - but looking at pics, this one looks to be symmetrical. Weird.

its comfortable to wear, no idea what its like in anything but fine weather though.
only 2 gripes are loud wind noise at speed and a lack of vision at the sides.
i have been at a couple of angled junctions and i was unable to see what was coming along the main road whilst i had my hands on the bars. a little bit disconcerting Shocked

Are second hand bikes really so pricey in the UK at moment? I always saw that here in Spain, used vehicles tend to hold their price better. The car I bought for 4000 euros would've cost me little more than half that in the UK.

I got my 2016 YBR with 9,500 km on it for 1500 euros. Surely there must be decent ones to be had in the UK that are slightly older and slightly cheaper.

Or maybe not.... what the hell do I know?

well, like i said to the OP, you could go on eBay UK and spend 2-3 minutes just looking in the relevant section - set it to cheapest first and see what BIN listings come up. £1k is not going to buy very much, whether it be 125cc or 1250cc.

I could absolutely do that, but I could also enter into an interesting conversation with fellow forum members about the relative prices of second hand motorbikes...
