Can someone please educate me on this? I understand that in the EU all new bikes "over 125cc" have had to have ABS fitted since 2016, right? But I assume that since what is typically marketed as a "125" will actually have an engine capacity of a little less than that, learner bikes are actually excluded from this legislation? Or am I missing something?

(A young relative who's just got his CBT has been pointed in my direction for advice, as the 'family biker' Rolling Eyes and it's one thing I just wanted to be clear about in my mind when I speak to him. Any useful tips to pass on, other than "don't get a brand new one" and "FFS don't buy a Chinese one"?)

Pretty sure the legislation says ABS or linked brakes and as previously stated linked brakes are the devils work...

ABS is a Life saver.

Needless Argument:
But on a race track they are not always regarded as beneficial.

The deal with ABS is that a good ABS system will prevent the brakes from stopping the wheel completely, which causes the tyre to lose traction with the road surface and slide. That effectively cancels any slowing down-ness by the braking system.
A person not skilled or with not much warning will, by reflex, grab a big handful and bite the dirt.

I think we can safely assume my young newbie relative will be doing exactly that; hence my enquiry so I can at least direct him to ABS-equipped bikes... if possible

No, it's because a lot of ABS systems are a bit crap and force you to run on in a corner. The best European systems seem OK, but a lot of Japanese stuff is overly nannying for the track.

Fairly sure since 2016(17?) ABS is mandatory (I thought the alternative of linked brakes thing was something prior to that?). Some 125s have ABS now too, e.g. the Honda C125, although it's only on the front wheel. Unsure if that's driven by legislation or Honda recognising riders on small machines might not always be experienced and perhaps more likely to panic and grab a handful.
