Something basic like magic mushrooms or marijuana you'd think - in the opinion of evolutionary biologists - that ppl would have evolved away from if they were such a bad thing in a similar fashion to northern European peoples developing lactose tolerance. i.e. it's a feature not a bug to be tripping balls on 'shrooms

Refined drugs - speed, heroin, cocaine... beer - are not naturally occurring things so human biology can be forgiven for being ill prepared. We can probably give alcohol fermentation a special dispensation as it's possibly existed for the same amount of time as lactose tolerance.

Lactose tolerance in adults was a relatively simple transition since infants are necessarily tolerant. The evolutionary impetus is said to be the domestication of cows, sheep and goats, but are we supposed to imagine that early man put up with stomach ache, diarrhoea and gas in the name of nutrition? “This gives me the squits but I keep drinking it”?
