My hobby is rebuilding workshop machinery. Lathes, mills, grinders etc. Also do the odd machining job and make the odd gear or two.

I mess with computers a lot. I have too many in my collection really....
Couple of Amstrad CPCs, an Amstrad PC1512 (IRC on that baby), several P1's and the odd 486, and everything I have owned until I built a new PC... plus I end up having what other people throw out. I don't have any 286 or 386's though... Rolling Eyes I hate throwing the damn things out too.
Also, I wouldn't call it a hobby, but three cars (1 = 42yo, and 1= 31yo) also keep me occupied.

My hobby is about learning new things and I'm the kind of person who has to know how things work.

The latest hobby being digital photography and when I say I'm learning new things, I really mean learning. Learning how to expose, compose, how to work with ISO, aperture, shutter speed, histogram... all there's to it.

I also do a lot of road cycling, exploring my surroundings. I learned how to repair and adjust everything on the bike. The same goes for motorcycles, by the way. I'm yet to learn how (try) to lace a bicycle/motorcycle wheel, though.

Next, I play guitar (I even used to compose my own music), now trying to get better at playing piano. I also cook and bake a lot, I still play videogames (99% retro games, 1% new stuff) every now and then and I'll probably learn yet another foreign language. I also used to be interested in wrist watches.

Tl; Dr: I do stuff.

Easier than you'd think, you should try it. You get cheaper, better wheels. It's one of those things where the wheel is greater than the sum of its parts. A good bicycle rim, hub and spokes costs a lot less than a built wheel. Not necessarily the case with motorcycles unfortunately.

It's surprisingly theraputic thing to do. I'd suggest starting with bicycle wheels. They are in some ways harder because you need to fiddle tension in them to allow for the runout but it'll get the principals down and everything you do has an obvious effect. Motorcycles ones are mostly about lacing them up correctly then setting an even tension with much less runout adjustment but you do still need to adjust runout and if you overdo it, it all goes tits-up.

Sheldon browns wheel building article is a good one to use, he goes into a lot of detail about WHY you do things a certain way while keeping the actual lacing up relatively simple.

You should try it. I find it a very mindful and calming thing to do. Just beware of chasing perfection, if you find yourself using a dial gauge rather than a pointer, it's time to think about what's going to happen when you hit the first pothole.

You'll also then be able to re-true damaged wheels, although being hand-built, you probably wont have to.

Cycling - both on road and off road. Out most days when it's nice, on Zwift if not. True my own wheels but never built one Wink
(Stealth ad: I've got a Trek 9.8 Elite on Gumtree... I dare say it's the only one... come through here and I'll see about the price/extras Wink )

Like quite a few others it seems, air rifle & pistol target shooting. To the point where I'm qualified as a national level coach Smile

Messing about with cars, although that's usually just installing a half decent ICE system and routine servicing these days.

Karate.

Hanging about on random old forums.

Gaming... taking a break from FPS and RPGs at the moment to play a bit of Wreckfest for a change.

And whatever little jobs SWMBO gives me!

I like to play Age of Empires4 and do a lot of SimRacing to relax. Rest of my time is taken up with motorcycles, girlfriend and son who has complex needs.

I got back into model (RC) cars over lockdown, and have recently finished building my Wild One buggy. I now have a Fire Dragon kit that I totally don't have time to build.

As you can see photography is not my milieu!

I also am into full scale cars a bit, and have a 997 Carrera 4S.

The Frog is quite a soughtafter vintage buggy. They used to race them with some success in Japan. It's low tech compared to today's buggies, I think they didn't even have a rear differential but they are an interesting model. They are based on the 'ORV' chassis which was also used for the Subaru Brat and the Audi Quattro Rally.

Nowadays it's totally different as you have lipo batteries, chargers that can charge in 10 minutes and brushless systems. You also can buy whatever you want from China and it costs hardly anything. A couple of lipo batteries and a charger would probably set you back £50 maybe, if that?

You also have more modern switching radios that don't need crystals, so you can race them against each other without worrying what band you're on.

Nope. Brushless gives you the same performance and it's reliable. Everyone I know who has ever had an IC engined RC car has used it once and then spent the next few years trying to get the thing started and ends up selling it cheap.

Causing myself pain. Various methods used over the years, from throwing myself out of moving taxis, picking arguments with multiple opponents, crashing motorcycles, setting fire to myself and currently overdoing the exercise sessions at every opportunity.

A little ashamed to admit, I only use kits. Wilko's IPA and bitter are OK-ish starting points. However, they work. I know my limits. As long as the bucket is properly sterilised (get an additional sterilising packet), and as long as I have sufficient brewers sugar to supplement what's supplied, plus a sachet of yeast in addition, it will be OK. I must say, it's one of those things that makes you appreciate the pros a lot. Commercial breweries really know what they're doing, and they generally get better results. However, getting good-ish results at home is acceptable and isn't as hard as, say, making your own throttle cables, yet can be rewarding.

The missus and I have been brewing beer for a few years now. Started with the kits, moved on to malt brewing in 5+ gallon saucepans and on to all grain and now using a 35l brewzilla.
Down in Florida we had well water, which was bloody excellent for beer, up here in South Carolina some of the results have been all but undrinkable because the utility water is fucking awful. Got a nice new inline carbon filter for our water supply so I think the next move is to test it and see what additives it might need, otherwise I'm stuck with buying spring water in 5 gallon bottles.
