Time was when you rarely saw a hedgehog lest it was flattened on the road, but apparently they’re in decline in parallel with the decline of hedgerows and the use of insecticides. I suspect the increase in predatory badgers (you never ever saw even badger roadkill in my youth) may have something to do with it too, although I’m not sure why badgers appear to be thriving.
In the last few years I’ve seen 3 to 4 hedgehogs at a time in my garden. This year, none so far.
As for this fucker, I’d kick him too. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-61174203 |

Got a couple of these for them to either hibernate in or just use as feeding stations: https://www.arkwildlife.co.uk/product/royal-hedgehog-house/
I also get hedgehog feed pellets and mealworms from them.
Went to Hull last night and saw about half a dozen dead badgers on the roads. ____________________ Current bikes: Hondas - Forza 750, ST1100A |

Front gardens into driveways.
Walls instead of hedges.
Fences with no gaps.
Fewer compost heaps.
Worms, slugs and insects form the main part of badgers diet...but will scoff anything. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

I think the population has been steadily increasing since they became protected in the early 70s and indiscriminate culling stopped.
Apart from the odd very brave fox (badgers can be vicious bastards) I'm struggling to think of a natural predator for them and they have developed a pretty successful strategy for keeping away from humans, so numbers seem to be on the rise.
Like you, I don't ever remember seeing them as roadkill when I was younger, but in the last few years it's not unusual to see dead ones in double figure numbers on trips to Southampton (especially on the more Southerly stretches of the A3) and I regularly see them alongside faster roads in Kent.
Having said that, the only live one I've ever seen was at night on Shooters Hill in London, when I stopped for what I thought was a run over dog in the road - as I got out of the car, it stood up, had a shake and lumbered off into the woods, sturdy looking thing, I wouldn't fancy tangling with one. ____________________ Things get better with age; I'm close to being magnificent........

We've been finding hedgehog poo in the garden over the last couple of weeks, and on Friday night were woken by the sound of two getting jiggy wid it. ____________________ Chances are quite high you are not in my Monkeysphere, and I don't care about you. Don't take it personally.

Obviously you can't please everyone, but I've found most customers are happy to play along once you've pointed it out. Given how cynical I am generally it's been honestly surprising how many people are actually prepared to consider wildlife, most of them wouldn't piss on the neighbour if they were on fire so the fact they'll consider the benefits for something they may never actually see often perplexes me ____________________ I'm immortal.
