Time was when you rarely saw a hedgehog lest it was flattened on the road, but apparently they’re in decline in parallel with the decline of hedgerows and the use of insecticides. I suspect the increase in predatory badgers (you never ever saw even badger roadkill in my youth) may have something to do with it too, although I’m not sure why badgers appear to be thriving.

In the last few years I’ve seen 3 to 4 hedgehogs at a time in my garden. This year, none so far.

Went to Hull last night and saw about half a dozen dead badgers on the roads.

I see roadkill badgers all the time. There’s normally a fresh dead one on the M74 slip road at Hamilton/ Motherwell junction every other morning. Also seen multiple in one journey down the A725.

We've been finding hedgehog poo in the garden over the last couple of weeks, and on Friday night were woken by the sound of two getting jiggy wid it.

Obviously you can't please everyone, but I've found most customers are happy to play along once you've pointed it out. Given how cynical I am generally it's been honestly surprising how many people are actually prepared to consider wildlife, most of them wouldn't piss on the neighbour if they were on fire so the fact they'll consider the benefits for something they may never actually see often perplexes me

We've just found out we have a resident badger... never had one before and seems very odd as it's very much a suburban garden - God knows where it's come from. But after finding a fence panel mangled and a hole dug beneath it, the neighbour pointed her security camera down the garden and it's definitely... a badger.

What's the deal with badgers, then? Are we supposed to cuddle them like hedgehogs, or splatter them like rats? Do I need to get rid somehow to avoid dying of TB? Seems little point in even blocking the holes under the fence, as it'll just dig another one...

Home made hedgehog feeder Mk2. Longer, lower, and three doors instead of two so there’s always an escape route. The Mk1 served well for five years or so but has now become brittle.
