|

Hi guys I would like some advice on the best way to go about fixing
my problem. It's an old ntv 650 from 1996 the front exhaust manifold
had totally rusted away and when I went to remove the bolts they snapped right off. So my question is wtf do I do now and what would be the cheapest way to fix it I crashed my other bike and broke my hand so money is very tight and the bikes so old I love spending time on it just not money

Start soaking it with penetrating oil now.
Best way is to get someone with a welder to weld a nut to the stub and use that to wind it out. The heat of the weld will usually loosen it off. Do this first, don't fuck about with it, it's much easier when there's still a bit sticking out. Any other ways will probably land up with it breaking off lower still or being ground/drilled down so you have nothing to weld onto. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That sucks, experience has told me never to use one of those things on a fitting that has snapped off due to being seized in place because as you've found, they invariably snap off and leave you with a worse job than when you started. They work well for extracting one that's sheared or been snapped through over-tightening though.
He's left you with a bitch of a job. You can sometimes get them with welding. Other than that, you're looking at a very long, slow job with carbide drills, spark errosion or an enormous amount of faffing with hot alum solution. If you're very lucky, depending on the type of extractor, might be able to fabricate a forked tool to grip and unwind the extractor at which point it's now centre-drilled and you can drill the rest out or fit a thread insert.
The chances of getting this sorted with the head still on the bike are rapidly diminishing. Might be worth starting to price-up used heads. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. That's when you find out everything you want to know.”

+1 for "should never have even tried an extractor". Too many monkeys around who think they know stuff and end up making things worse by using the wrong tools.
It's not too late to weld a nut on. I've had success on ships capstans with 20 years of salt corrosion by doing that, then shocking the welded on nut with a hammer while you put torque on it. ____________________ Blue_SV650S wrote: it was a sh1te wheelie, but it proves that he can get it up in 3rd and can do angles. I am in good old Bristol m8 its not been a good 3 months i haven't worked as i crashed my cb125f after work and broke my hand that's why i was playing around with the 650.I have started working now but the first day back i went into a shop and a car reversed into the CB.
I must have done something very bad in a past life Anyway i put the 650 back together but forgot to take a pic i just wanted to see how loud it was going to be if i needed to take it somewhere and the bracket i got needed to be cut down a bit and i wanted to get it sorted .Turns out i only needed to cut a bit of the length off and its thicker than the old one
but i was still able to get one stud in and a nut on and fairly tight.
Due to it being thicker metal i noticed it now hits a bracket that holds the radiator on and this seems to be just enough pressure that when i started it up it didn't sound any louder than before to me I think I'll take that as a sign to leave well enough alone its MOT is up next month i will wait and see if it gets through before i decide if its worthwhile fixing. The CB is playing up now and i need it to earn money so i have to get that done first these old people can't put themselves to bed you know |

Some extractors have flutes on them like a tap. If it's this sort, you might be able to get on it with a tap extractor which is like a tube spanner with tangs sticking out that fit into the flutes. The extractor itself should back out relatively easily if you can get any sort of a grip on it.
Alum does work. They routinely dissolve broken taps and drills out of complex alloy pneumatic valves. It's a relatively cheap and readily available chemical that dissolves steel but doesn't touch aluminium. It however does have to be strong, hot and in contact with the piece for a period of several hours.
Unless you have access to nitric acid? Dilute nitric will dissolve steel but not aluminium (unless you make it too dilute, when perveresely, it will dissolve both). ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink.
