Ordered a new cover for the XJ even though it's not even torn (what was I thinking?!)

Anyhow my recent long-distance (cough) ride of 90 miles left me wondering it was also time to give the foam some attention.. I've heard sanding off a hardened top layer can help, or there's the option to add memory foam like this helpful chap...

Anyone done this and like to comment? Cheers.

I got the seat on my ER6F done by Tom Hurley Customs in Edinburgh.

https://www.tom-hurley.com

I got the top cover replaced with a nice plush soft fake leather type material and the replaced the foam and added a gel area to it too. He had to modify the under-side of the seat pan to accommodate the larger amount of foam too.

It wasn't cheap it was £155.00, but when I sat my arse back on the bike with the new seat it was game changing.

If you could afford the cost of doing that I would recommend that instead of trying a DIY solution. If not and DIY is your way to go then the memory foam will help but remember it will take a bit of time to memorise the nuances of your arse Laughing

For me the gel was the game changer in my seat, took all the pressure off my coccyx when sitting upright.

Thanks - DIY is kinda my thing.

a) because I'm pathologically mean
b) I like to learn new stuff
c) if it works it's another 'little victory'.

there is some debate over gel vs memory foam - were you given the option?

I have both. The gel is recessed into the memory foam in the pressure point areas so you don't see any lumps or changes on the cover but when you run your hand over it you can feel the change in compression resistance under the cover.

Yep played about with seat covers many's a time with varying degrees of success.
RE foam
There's foam and there's foam
Basic foam has weight and density so careful selection is advised
for instance

Some folk go on about memory foam and gel but in reality they
rarely spend significant amounts of time in the saddle.
If you do long runs then getting the seat right is more important.
Otherwise it may be a cosmetic exercise.

Shaping a seat to fit your particular bum and leg length can make a bike more comfy though.
A high wide seat and short legs is not a good combination.

Crying or Very sad I literally ride hundreds of miles

The shaping part is a good point to consider though, when my seat got done he took into consideration my size for working out the points that needed gel and additional support.

I am not an upholsterer but I don't see any harm in it if it's being renewed on top of it anyway with new foam.

Done a few times.

Decent staple gun. Make sure staples are lon enough buy not too long. Memory foam or Gel inserts are easy enough to do
Dan Mledica do nice gel inserts that can be trimmed to fit.

I got a sewing machine off Freecycle a while back that I repaired and have been
mulling over having a go at getting some vinyl and making a seat cover for the scooty.
It's fine except for a split in a tricky place where PO's have stuck gaffer tape on
There's a cheap TPU stretchy type thing over it atm to keep the weather out

https://imgur.com/f4DduSL.jpg

I got a quote for £150 from an upholsterer
but I'm a cheap bastard and like to have a go at things myself.

Its a much more complex shape than a bike seat though
and I have no delusions of matching the skill and experience of a pukka seat wallah, so may just cough up the dosh and get it done properly.
