Hi,

My GSXR's fork seals are leaking. I'm handy, but im worried about changing the seals myself because of compressing the seals and so I've taken them off to take to a garage.

How much is reasonable for them to charge for replacing the seals and refilling them? I'm guessing 2hrs work but im not sure and i dont want to be unfair on the amount of work needed.

any ideas on time/money
ta

£80/1 hour labour would be more than enough id imagine. its quite a quick job if you know what youre doing.

quite easy to do at home too. plenty of videos online showing how

If you can get the old seal out in one piece (easy with a hook or screw) it can be used to drift the new one on.

Its a mugs game to replace the seal but not the bushes though.

ive had a look, i think what concerns me is the compressing the spring and getting the right amount in, and them setup. tbh if its an hour for a pro id rather they do it, i might ask if i can watch for next time.

thank you for your answer

Experience has also taught me to use OEM bushes wherever possible. I've had pattern ones be such a poor fit that the seals failed again in quite a short period of time.

The spring won't need much compressing provided the fork leg is fully extended when you try and do it. I've done it on my Sprint (amongst oother equally large bikes) without too much trouble just by pushing the cap down with my hand. You may have to undo all the preload though. This is easy to do (if it even has preload). Measure the turns out when you undo it to min and then do it back up the same amount after re-assembling the fork leg.

If there was only some sort of container that you could use to measure a liquid in with a reasonable accurancy...

(Sarcasm, use a syringe or a jug)

Pay a man to do them. Cartridge forks are the work of the devil. I’m pretty handy but I won’t touch them beyond changing oil and springs.

firstly just wanted to thank everyone again for their comments.

dropped them off this morning, 1.5 hrs work - they'll check the bushes for me. I should have them back by the weekend which in itself makes it worth it as i can put the bike back togetehr rather than work on the frames.

again, just want to say thanks - i come here intermittently now as bikes are a much smaller part of my life than when i first did (i know, i know) but people here are always so kind, knowledgeable and giving its a blesssing

thanks

Its apart, might as well get fresh ones in there, only because stripping again a few months down the line may become a thing Thumbs Up Might as well replace while its completely apart.

Amen Buddah.

Tyres and Fork seals are the only things I will pay someone else to do.

The hardest part for forks was splitting them, What a sod that can be.

Quite. I usually have a 50:50 success rate. One will just pop apart, the other invariably lands up with the bushings overriding one another and jamming in tight leading to a 2 hour swear-a-thon.

That said, I then think exactly the same thing would have happened if I'd given it to someone else to do and I can imagine one of two scenarios, the first being a bill three times as much as I thought it would be. The second being they decide they can't be arsed and telling me it's fucked and I need a new fork.

I've never had that issue. Once you get over the fact that you normally try and have mechanical sympathy and it simply needs a couple of hard belts to make it come apart it's simple.

Admittedly I've never done USD ones and I dread to think what cartridge shocks are.

Still trying to work out how you do this. There tends not to be wear measurements in manuals so I guess it's just look at them.
