Hey all,
After peg relocation I've kept my zx9r and used it for a couple of long trips satisfactorily.

I've got a 3250mi round trip to Faro (mostly camping) with a couple friends in two weeks, due to some personal circumstances, one rider dropped out, so I'm taking his pillion.

Usually the throw over panniers and tent/etc in the back seat is alright, but now I need something else.
I was going to buy a Ventura rack, but called them up and they said it takes up to 3 months to make it! (made to order...), there was one on ebay I bought, but it was wrongly labelled it's completely different. I see some that attach to the grab handle mounts but I've heard this is rather fragile, and expensive too.

If anyone's got some suggestions, or a rail I can buy/rent for two weeks, please Rolling Eyes

Alternatively I'm also looking at buying another bike for 1-2k with more comfort and luggage options (great excuse hey) and cheap insurance (sub $200) Laughing, VFR800/Sprint ST/X11 (yeah that's cheaper to insure than a 125) and some big bore nakeds seem to fit the bill, but I'd probs sell it afterwards as I actually wanted a second smaller bike, unless it was better than the zx9r...

I did try a Z1000SX, didn't really like it, and I don't have 6k available right now Laughing

dunno but i'd get a piece of decent, real sheepskin for the pillion seat - that's a bloody long way to ride for the poor person on the back

the only way i can think to do this is generous tank bag, pack very, very lightly, and take rucksacks that are lightly packed

She's gone on day/weekend trips with me before, at 55kg and short she said she likes it, but from that to 3k miles lies a big difference...

I might just just buy a cheap bike for the trip and be done with it...
Wish I had my CB750 back here right now Laughing maybe I should buy another one.

ZX9R and long range pillion shouldn't be too bad, but I'd much rather not Laughing

I used Gearsack luggage on my R1 and fitted under the seat and left plenty of room for a pillion, quite large side luggage. I'd potentially give them the rucksack or just fashion your own luggage mount which in turn could work as a light use back rest Laughing

I don't think its a superb bike choice though.

Sell it for same when you return Mr. Green

Yep ventura's the same, shame it takes so long to order, I was ready to cough up £120 for it Laughing (already have the top part, cheap from ebay)

I've ridden a Deauville, felt bike a comfy sofa, no bash but it doesn't vibe with me Rolling Eyes
Looking through ebay to see bike options, I'm considering VFR800 (late 90s to early 00s), Sprint ST (06-07) or any big ol' naked that makes a rumble.

I've always wanted to try a blackbird but that feels OTT Laughing where I'm going it's gonna be twisty asf and it's not that cheap to run Idea

Last trip mate had a Tracer 700 and he was putting 20-30% less fuel than me everywhere except carriageways Razz

Good luck finding something within two weeks.

I'd buy whatever came up cheap with a good service history and comes with luggage. New tyres or recently added would be a bonus otherwise budget for those and change filters & fluids maybe.

For that distance stick to faired, will be much more pleasant when it inevitably rains at some point. VFR or Fazer should be the initial go to's. V-strom mentioned above is a good shout. Good reliability, comfy, stick it in third for the twisties and just go.

If you're just going to sell it again then doesn't really matter what it is as long as it's reliable.

I’ve got a Renntec rack on my ‘99 ZX6R which fits like that, and it’s never been a problem. It’s not huge but a stuffsacks-and-bungees/cargo net combo means you can pile a fair amount on. Admittedly my luggage usually covers the pillion seat too so I’m not sure how a passenger would fair.

Plenty of stuff about and if it's made it past 40k miles and has 12 months MOT and new tyres ..... but would you trust it without riding it for a bit first? But for that mileage i'd want something comfy for me and she'll deffo appreciate not being sat on top of a tiny beanbag of a pillion seat.

I'm a big fan of using Renntec Sport Racks, soft panniers and a tankbag.
https://renntec.com/product/kawasaki-zx-9r-c-e-carrier-in-black/

Not sure what the lead time is, might be worth checking ebay and other outlets.

You'd be surprised how much stuff you can pile on it.
Using the above mentioned luggage, I've carried enough gear for me and the missus to go camping for a week.

She would have a backpack on, and if the bike was loaded correctly it would all act like she has a backrest.

Comfy times.

Thanks for all the help guys Very Happy
It's defo gonna be one of these bikes me thinks, I'm looking through now and should have one by next weekend for any final preparations Very Happy

How does the R1100rs compare to some of the inline 3/4? I suppose more laid back, chill, let's ride vibe? I figure I can set the pace on pretty much anything as my friends aren't maniacs.

Still interested in a rack regardless, CaNsA, I've read somewhere the racks that bolt where the grab handles are usually breaks the mount or something, I've not had a thorough look myself, maybe I didn't interpret it properly or I'm confusing with something else? Confused

could you really trust buying a 2nd hand bike for such a long journey, bit of an unknown at short notice

do Kriega make anything suitable for luggage ? me and the wife had their stuff for a week around Wales, my pannier ones though look like they would be too close to your exhaust on the zx9r, your pillion might have to rucksack a lot of it

rather than camp, to save on luggage needs, have you thought of booking some hotels along your route instead ?

i see their are racks which extend behind the pillion, you might get a 30L Kriega on one of those, maybe with some 10's either side ?

Possibly, it's a bit of a wild bet Laughing

The soft panniers have just about enough clearance, and just about touch if extended and loaded, it doesn't get hot enough to burn though (on my previous bike it was the fumes rather than exhaust that made a burned hole as the tip pointed up)

It's a grab rail with a rack on it.
Replaces the current grabs.
Fixes to the same mount points.
Straight swap.

If the mounts or bolts break then you've over tightened the bolts.

I've had one for each of the bikes i've owned, except my zx6r, and none have failed.

If I were suddenly faced with a short notice trip in excess of 3000 miles, with a pillion and all that entails, I would probably buy this, or something very like it.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255577782452?hash=item3b819f78b4:g:N2oAAOSw-FRipLcZ

With your very specific requirements, I definitely wouldn't buy a dry clutch BMW, unless you have documented proof of a very recent replacement.

Buy a Goldwing. Lady pillion riders who get on the back after the ignominy of a crotch rocket bum pad will love you.

Here's one for you, if you know where you are going to stop, send some kit you need to each place and send dirty stuff back via courier. Then you can travel light and possibly save money.

I usually run a similar solo setup to you, but with a pillion I would just try to find a tourer with hard luggage ready to go, pannier each and split the topbox or leave it empty for helmets. Soft bags will likely just be a pain in the arse blocking pillions legs.

Realistically for 2k budget, I think you could bag a TDM/XJ900 with hard cases ready to go. Unless its a 20k adventure bike setup for it, luggage and pillion will make most stuff handle pretty poor anyhow so I would factor comfort and practicality in a lot more.

I've come down to 3 models, some of which I might actually keep. Rode a TDM, hated the damn thing. BB would be overkill and expensive to keep, no point. Weirdly there's some Sprint ST for 2k, interesting but afraid of hot seat as it'll be 35 C*. I always wanted a ZRX but overpriced. Anyways:

VFR800 5, <2k, cheap insurance, full luggage, cycle-ergo leads me to believe the position is comfy. Wouldn't keep as not ulez and too close but inferior to zx9r
Example 1
Example 2
There's some 6th gen VFRs too but all I hear is the 5th is better

Bandit 1250, ~2k, supposedly bulletproof trains, ulez, might keep

Lastly but not least, I was looking through the R1100R/RT/RS and found this damn beautiful thing and am considering pulling funds for it from elsewhere Rolling Eyes

R1200R, 4k (ouch), insurance same as zx, read it's more refined than bandit and a good tourer with the small screen. Better be damn good and I might just keep it, afraid of bmw ownership costs though.

Just to reiterate, have you got experience of riding a dry clutch BM and has that had a new one (it's about the right mileage for needing it) ?

Also, when I asked a good friend of mine (25+ year veteran BMW tech) about buying a boxer, he said and I quote "If you absolutely have to have one, don't get anything newer than an 1150".

Just saying.........

A mate has the 1250 Bandit with hard luggage that was sold by Suzuki as the GSX1250F. He absolutly adores it.

Nope, never tried a boxer either, only the K1300S. Rolling Eyes
And no idea, would have to ask.
