Hi All

Probably been asked lots of times, can rear facing police vans catch motorbikes? was doing around high 30s in a 30 when I saw it hiding, there was a bike going way faster than me and a van so hopefully he was pointing his gun at them... Laughing

Yes they can.
Surely doing high 30s in a 40 isn't breaking the law anyway?

I believe they can still take the reading off you as you approach, then use cameras facing forward to record the reg plate. Everything is time/date stamped so I doubt they'd be any argument. It takes seconds I think to get a lock and measure speed, so depending on agility they may or may not have clocked you, especially if they were interested in someone going faster.

Although not a hard rule, usual guidelines are around speed limit plus 10% plus 2mph, so in a 30 if you do 36 or above you're asking for trouble. Factor in your speedo error (which may or may not be significant) and you could be looking at an indicated 37/38. If you've a clean licence, you'll almost certainly get offered a speed awareness course at these levels anyway though.

A propaganda piece. The speed vans set up in all the same spots in my area and none of those spots are high accident areas or anywhere useful like outside schools. They're all easy-catch speed limit transitions and dual carriageways.

meant high 30s in a 30, probably around 36-38ish; luckily it wasn't yesterday when it was warmer as on the same road I was cooling the bike down a bit more Laughing

had speed awareness around 2 years ago so not sure if I will get it again

That doesn't change the part where is explains that bikes can be caught.

Around my way vans area where people speed but I'm not aware of any accidents to justify them.

I've always been given a nice picture of the back of my bike from rear facing vans when I approached it from the rear.
