I've ordered a digital speedometer that displays gear position.

I understand where the RPM, indicators, "N" Gear, High and low Beams etc cables should be connected to but the wires for gears 1-6 confusing me.

Vfr400's dont have a gear position sensor like modern bikes so where do the 6 wires go?
Is there possibly a diagnostic plug I can't see that it cant see that I can plug into or do I have to splice into the ECU wires and if so which ones?

My guess would be that the dash is a generic one, and not specifically for the NC30, in which case I'd just ignore those wires. I doubt the NC30 has any electrical connection to the gear selector mechanism, nor a clever enough ECU to 'know' what gear it's in by revs vs speed like more modern bikes do. I'm willing to be corrected but I'd be extremely surprised.

I do have the NC30 Haynes manual downstairs, so I guess I could look at the wiring diagram. Maybe I'll do that next time I'm in the garage. As I said though, I'd be extremely surprised if there is a legit method of calculating gear position using the bikes own electronics.

Maybe the dash has some intelligence in it to calculate it with revs vs speed? I know my gear position indicator on my CBR600RR needed calibrating when I first got it. In which case, it already has connections for the tacho and the speedo, it can use it's own brain to work it out, surely?

Yeah, what he said.

I reckon the fact your gizmo has cables in search if a switch
means it cant calculate the gear based on speed and revs,
so tape them up, tuck them away and forget it.

There is also a good chance an NC30 is a Japanese home market model, in which case there is an optical switch inside the clocks hooked up to the CDI which cuts power to the rear two cylinders if you exceed a certain speed (which was manadtory in japan at the time they were made).

It's not as simple as disconnecting it or connecting the wires together, the CDI is looking for a specific output on the end of that wire. You usually need to either retain the optical switch or fit an appropriate voltage divider.

Also they have a check position (think it's at about 30mph) to check if the speedo has been disconnected or removed, I believe the CDI goes into a super low power mode if this test isn't passed.
