So back in ye olden days you'd be out in the fields working for 18 hours a day just to scratch a living. Malnutrition was a problem for 99% of people for the last >150,000 years Sad

But now we have all the food we could possibly want (in the Western world at least and increasingly elsewhere in the world) so ppl are living longer, growing taller and with the advent of cheap processed food obesity is more of a problem.

"Music is food for the soul" if we just take that as an axiom on entertainment in general the same sort of trend has happened. People used to have to make their own entertainment...

https://www.picclickimg.com/d/l400/pict/354127364369_/Antique-Old-Print-1889-John-Brinsmead-Sons-Piano.jpg

But now entertainment is available to all on demand - Deliveroo and Netflix being roughly analogous - it's not something you have to make yourself.

We think ourselves superior to our antecedents and in a lot of ways we are. How could anyone today consider themselves culturally malnourished? But if junk food is an issue for our bodies would it follow that junk content is poison for our minds? If so what is the equivalent of obesity?

Maybe "luxury beliefs" Thinking

I'm of the opinion that the simpler you keep life, the happier you'll be. Maintain good relationships with the people around you - that's the most important thing.
You will never replace this with gadgets and hobbies, still less with ideologies and politics. Those are not even sufficient replacement for religion, however you feel about that. More like crippled religions.

Well think of it like this: you came back from the farm, sat in your front room and if you were lucky and you could read (probably by candle light) you'd pull down one of a very small collection of books on the shelf. On Sunday you'd go to church to be hectored by the rector - very parochial by modern standards.

Today if you want to read Plato's Republic or Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil you can whip out your phone at any time. If you've a mind to there is no limit on the knowledge and culture on tap.

But most people don't do that.

Yes we can drag up our kids from the savagery of "the terrible twos" to functional human beings in just a few years but it goes way beyond that to be fed shite like "pop music." How many chart successes didn't use autotune these days?

TBF it's not all bad. Watching Demolition Man is obviously much quicker than reading Brave New World (cultural shortcuts) but I wonder what the over-consumption of drivel is doing for mental health.

Why would they?
Overthinking is probably responsible for half the world's ills.

And I don't really care what music the young folks want. I can still listen to all the music I love. Smile

Just like yesterday
Then I get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again."

No, it's just that we have this wonderful thing called social media now so we can see all of them. Isn't progress a wonderful thing? Laughing

Don't be so ridiculous.

T' Net is a font of knowledge.

How can peepol be infinitely more stupider when the information for life is freely available on T' Net?

t’internet is shortening your attention span and narrowing your views. It knows the things you like and rewards you with them, reinforcing how clever and witty you are. Who needs other points of view, different perspectives?

Actually, I find the whole thing very disappointing. Can't see what all the fuss is about myself.

I was going to say Boomers and Generation X are largely immune to the temptations of the Interwebs but then I think of all the old ppl moaning up about barking dogs or loud music on Facebook Sad
