Member back in 2018 I had play with this 1975 Mobylette N40?

I got it up, running and rideable but the the lights were a joke so I half wave rectified the ac output, kinda regulated it and got leds to work.
Not brilliant, but better then the previous feckin useless and they did work and kept working consistently for the last 4 years.
He's been taking it to an 'expert' in the meantime who when the back light stopped
working, gave up in horror after trying to fix my 'too complicated' wiring.
It was just the contact feeding the rear lamp that had drifted off the bulb at the back of headlight.
No tools needed, just finger and thumb to twist it slightly back in place and voila!
Some bloody expert.
To be fair he probably took to him cos apparently I'd called it cheap useless pile of shite out loud when I thought I was just thinking it

Anyway I suggested the lights could possibly be better with full wave conversion and pointed out a 12v light and cdi conversion kit I'd seen Moby riders on the interweb using.
The cdi ignition would do away with the points and use cheap easily sourced
off the shelf components.
When I asked him to restart it he had to ride the fecker uo and down lane to get it running!!
WTF ?
"Do you always have to do that?" I asked
"Usually" he says
Sod that for a lark, I'd rather ride a bicycle

So, I tell him what to buy and wonder if I should have just told him to fuck off with it but start the process.
Heres the stock setup, blue coil lights, red coil ignition/points
each coil has one tail to ground

New stator, this and the flywheel are smaller in diameter than original
Black coil is the AC CDI source coil
Note the upper lighting coil has a tail to ground.
I lifted this and laid in a cable to take both ends out to a bridge rectifer
in a 4 wire RegRec. £ 10 from Ebay
Note the reluctor at 3 o clock, I couldn't see any obvious trigger node for this
on the rotor, more on this later.

Stator modded and bolted down I timed it at 1.5mm BTDC
(roughly 16 degrees BTDC by my rough calcs) and fitted the rotor
Badly, the magnets pulled it out of line as I offered it up
so I decided it may be useful to knock up a puller should I need to get it off again at a later date
This proved to be a good idea

Most of the wiring laid in and awaiting the GY6 AC CDI and coil kit
the regulator is bolted under the rack.
Juts kicking it over with the plug out got the headlight light to shine pretty brightly so that was encouraging.
I went a bit belt and braces and commoned all the grounds to a single point on the frame hidden by the chain guard.
Most connections soldered and sleeved, crimps used on serviceable ones.

When the AC CDI arrived I just used the CDI box and kept the old coil plug and cap.
After connecting it up I gave it kick over and the fecker started!!!
No pedalling like buggery up and down the lane just a smart kick over.
Whoo hoo result!

Snags
the kit didn't come with a nut to hold the new flywheel on and I had to mod the old one
It fitted but on later examination I realised really didn't have enough surface are to act on and hold the flywheel securely on the taper and the timing started to drift until I couldn't start it.
A slight annoyance but at least I knew what it was and what was needed to fix it so I sourced the correct nut and got him buy one
this where that puller came in handy.
During this time I found the reluctor didn't have a node to trigger it and it sparked multiple times per revolution and had an affect when the piston was up on its compression stroke.
Seems iffy to me but hey it works.

All fitted and working, the only obvious give away is the smaller shiny flywheel and possibly the RR bolted under the rack
The lights while considerably improved were still a bit flickery at low revs
A capacitor from supply to gorund really improved this and made them brighter and more steady.
Note the shiny new nut on the rotor
