PostPosted: 11:41 - 25 Jul 2022    Post subject: Retirement??? Reply with quote

I had everything planned out when I was 20yrs of age. I'd just bought my first house, had a great pension plan, earned a good wage and had planned to retire like my Dad at the age of 55yrs. I would have paid my mortgage off by the time I was 40yrs as I was able to over pay and the last 5 years of working life was to build up savings and pension pot.

Well I will be 55yrs at the end of this year and the realization that I will never retire, I will be working till the the day I drop. Thanks to redundancy, two divorces, ill health and now renting so will never pay anything off. Having only one income coming in, the inheritance from my parents and what would have been my in-laws is now just my parents,

I'm not saying life is crap, it isn't, but I do wonder how many others will be in the same position of never being able to retire?

A lot. It is the Tory dream having an entire underclass of people that can be used and extracted from.

The squeezing of the middle class is only worsening as well so the pool of indefinite labour is expanding.

Sounds like the OP's situation is mainly the sad result of two divorces rather than a Tory government, no?

I was referring to OP's question in that many people will have a similar fate. People face shit in their lives and it is very easy to lose it all and end up working forever unless you are lucky or careful and by careful, I mean risk averse so you are stuck at the lower end of net worth for your entire life.

I kind of retired from working offshore 7 years ago after my wife died. I now have to care for my son who is disabled and has complex needs. I could potentially go back to work and put my son into 24 hour care. I wouldn't do that though. Told my wife that I'd look after him. A bit morbid sorry but he has a short like expectancy so may have to go back to work again and some point in the future.

I do miss work, the money, the traveling and the banter with the guys. On the plus side I can spend more time with my son, mates and motorbikes. Money is tight as I had no pension plan. To be fair we are looked after financially by the government. Although having to sell motorbikes to keep afloat at the moment. I worked for 38 years, never saved a penny. Had fun until things started to go pear shaped.

I can't even bear the idea.
Retire and do what?
I'll probably have to keep working til I die anyway, the amount of readies I've spunked away over the decades Shocked

I don't know what I would do if I did stop.
Have afternoon tea and scones?
Read a book?
Or something sedate ... maybe set up a poker school, sitting on a high stool with a cigarillo counting all the takings Thinking

I can keep the programming going a fair while but I suppose I'll have to knock it on the head when my eyesight goes.

If I picture myself doing the same as my father-in-law, restoring old motorbikes in my retirement, it'd probably be a good trick in 20 years or so what with all the electric shite. Be nice if one of the kids/grandkids popped round from time to time to lend a hand Smile

Nah.

Whores moan too much.
(in all the wrong kind of ways)

Plus, most of them these day are only just old enough to be my grandchildren, and even though they might be highly-popular Elbonian slag-bags that take it lucratively up the arse without a condom, I don't much fancy putting up with their petty nonsense.

Elbonian anal slag, aged 20 (max.): "Darlingkh, you not putting my details out as good as hers, she got more business, you favourite her."
Me: "No, DARLINGKH, trust me when I say that I have no favourites amongst you."

Plus, punters are also prone to being a pain in the shiter: asking who's on, having a wank while you tell them, and then hanging up Laughing - nah, fuck that.

Kind of over all that.
It's no longer entertaining.

I still cry, every time I receive paperwork back from the pension fund, about the expected annuity from my pot.....

I would hope that within ~10 years I can step back from work, I would like to stop at 45/50. Pension is pretty decent, I'm pretty cheap when it comes to spending, I reckon I could do without the pension for a fair few years... as long as the economy doesn't go absolutely fucked in the next 10-15 years Laughing

I am very sorry to hear you've had it so tough mate, I really hope that I can avoid those pitfalls myself. I really hope things financially turn around for you!

My plan is to buy a house this year or next (waiting on uncertainty over rates, etc at the moment) and then pay it off asap. I am a sole applicant looking for something 4 bedrooms in the £275,000 to £325,000 range here in Scotland. I plan to pay off the mortgage in less than 10 years but this plan rests on the profitability of the company as I would be using dividends to make 10% overpayments in blocks every April.

I have a good pension that I make overpayments to and I regularly put money into stocks I like.

I make good money now and I will keep saving as much as I can so I can retire in my 50's but in all honesty I would rather that the business is acquired by a larger competitor so that I can retire now off the capital gains made on my stake Laughing

I've always thought of pensions and retirement, and even looked into what pensions I've got and quickly backed away... Shocked
I'm very lucky that I married into a rich family (not on purpose!), but I need to stay married now to be able to retire comfortably at any point!

Early deaths in the family have made me realise it's better to spend and enjoy yourself now than save up and end up never being able to use it. Having said that, I'm in a fortunate position to be able to do that.
Mortgage is going to run till I'm late 60's, but at least then I'll have £400k+ equity to release (unless the housing market collapses).

My main aim by the end of my life is to make my daughters life as easy as possible. I want to be able to support her through college/uni or whatever she decides to do, and get her own house asap - if there's one thing I've learnt, get on the property ladder as soon as possible to get a good start in life.

I find the whole retirement thing a bit of a murky horizon. When I was younger I assumed I'd hang up my work shoes at 60 like many of my colleagues at the time, but I'm fast realising that unless you're very lucky, that's unlikely to happen (I'm now in my late 30s). I've got fragmented pensions scattered all over the place that desperately need pulling together, but even so they're probably not worth much. My employer has improved things, but it's still a long way.

I'm fortunate that I've not had anything financially catastrophic happen to me (yet!) and such things are almost always unforeseen unless you live a pretty pessimistic existence, so I fully get how the OP's life predictions have fallen apart.

Slightly related I guess, but I've lost a fair number of friends and family over the past 18 months (none due to Covid though, but that has made it harder) and it's making me realise that there's a balance between trying to plan too far in the future but in doing so sacrificing the present. I used to be borderline obsessive about long-term planning but I'm reigning that in a bit and focussing on the here and now a bit more so I can enjoy time with my family and friends as you never know when circumstances might change or people unexpectedly are no longer in your life.

First 25/40th of a civil service pension kicks off in 2030 with the bonus of a lump sum on the 30k range currently. At that point I go part time until 2037 when the second 1/2 pension based on full time wages and 7/30 of a pension 9n part time wages starts.

This is also the same time as my mortgage is paid off and state pension pays out.

With any luck the little bastard would be about to finish his degree at about the same time.

I get the feeling that people want to much from retirement?
Surely goals and aspirations should/would/can change as people get towards retirement.

When you’re retired, (I retired early)do you need a big powerful car and four bikes and a massive stereo, and a larger house.
Did you not have all these things when you were younger?
After all they all cost and generally income is not what it used to be.

Me,, I’m reducing my bikes, I only drive an old Ford Focus, and live in a smaller house than I used to.

As for being bored? F*ck no! There’s always stuff to do, for example, all the stuff I never got round to doing when I was in full time employment.

Oh God ! I sound like an old person who’s ready to die Shocked !

If I ever get to retirement, it's the things I'd like to do that consume time that work prevents at the moment. Motorbikes, cycling, camping, walking etc.. - nothing particularly expensive. Probably downsize (not that the current house is a mansion) as once the kid has left, I don't think we'll need as much space plus when I eventually get a bit decrepit it's less agro to keep clean, maintain and move about in.

Pipe dream: a lovely little old cottage in a rural village with a nice pub and village store that sells all the essentials. Child comes to visit occasionally with his offspring.

Reality: probably still living in a battered semi in Greater Manchester with cretins screaming past on stolen off-road bikes all the time, hobbling to Aldi and having to fight my way through to get my shopping, then tip-toeing around the dog turds on the way home. When not doing that, babysitting half the week as the cost of living and totally f'd up economy means laddo and mrs. laddo can't afford nursery so mummy and daddy are "employed" for nowt instead.
