I’ve got to drive into Edinburgh this afternoon (by car). I’m reading up on the Low Emission Zone that got introduced in May this year, however the www site says there’s ‘a two-year ‘grace’ period before penalty charges will be applied’ - so basically crack on in my battered 20 year old Honda Civic and leave the Euro 4 compliant 3 litre turbo petrol BMW at home??
How odd!

Take any car you want it doesn't come into force until 01st June 2024. Edinburgh is fucking horrible to take a car into already. I fucking hate Edinburgh, I always take a bike or public transport there now.

Your Euro 4 compliant 3.0 litre turbo petrol Bimmer (which gets easily gapped by my electron powered car btw Wink ) will also be ok when it's in force too.

So why introduce it now? Two years as a ‘grace period’? I’d have thought three or six months would suffice for folk to get used to it.
Will I get a letter educating me as to how I’ve killed endless kittens when I return from my Edinburgh through going into said LEZ I wonder…

It's frog brought to the boil slowly principle, they think two years to get used to the idea will lessen the outrage when all the fees start coming in and businesses go bust.

I’m about to leap into my petrol car and drive home - 320 miles or so. I will need a fuel top up though, probably five minutes tops. Would your car still be filling with electrons or would that be ready and able? That’s assuming you can find an electron dispenser in Edinburgh city too!

When I drove my Model 3 from London to Glasgow I stopped two times, once for lunch and another for a piss. The car charged on the supercharger while I ate a Burger King and it wasn't an issue at all. Range anxiety is horse shit that nay-sayers keep spouting until they actually live with an electric car and realise it's not a big deal.

Nobody routinely drives 320 miles, it's a rare occasion and on those occasions you plan around it. Yeah it takes 20 minutes to supercharge and not 5 minutes (which is also a myth) but who fucking cares when you're having the lunch you'd have had anyway? Laughing

I've had this car for months and never once worried about my range.

Sadly I do - I work 320 miles from home and travel weekly. I do agree though that I the exception, electric cars have more than enough range for (almost) everyone and are, to those people, better than internal combustion!
I think when they become a reasonable alternative for me I’ll be powered by electrons too!

Just saw some low emission zone street signs up in Bristol next to some funky new looking cameras so it's not long
now before they start robbing us here.

How much does your car cost? I wouldn't mind a 300 mile range electric car but you are talking 50 grand. My old Jag has a 450 mile range and cost relative pennies.

It's like private rents. No one can afford them but that's the only choice you are going to have.

It's stlll out of the price range of most.

Interestingly i saw no indication of a LEZ in Edinburgh. I drove to the centre, walked around a bit and saw nothing. Curious what’s actually happening….
I’m also curious if I’ll get a letter from Ms. Sturgeon advising me what a horrid human I am as a warning for the future.

The LEZ in Glasgow is bounded on two sides by the M8 ... but I suppose all the emissions from those vehicles will be told they cannot enter the LEZ, so no issue there then!!

Sorry to burst your righteous bubble, but there's a reason I'm driving an old Disco 2 and burning all of the dinosaurs. I regularly (at least once a fortnight and often more) do a ~680 mile round trip from the Midlands up to the Scottish Borders, usually without stopping when driving each way. That's usually at least 6 hours and around 340ish (depending on road closures and diversions) miles in one go.

As yet I'm pretty sure there's no electric vehicle - even at insane price levels - that would give me the same load space, towing capacity and ease of fuelling.

While I'm in agreement that EVs are the future (particularly when we finally get our heads around microgeneration instead of centralised utilities) it really isn't practical for everyone right now. No matter how much money you can afford to throw at the problem the infrastructure and engineering just isn't in place.

As to driving in Edinburgh, I don't mind it too much other than silly season. Then again, I spent nearly 20 years despatching all over the UK but based out of London. You become immune to the foibles of the British road system Laughing

320 miles so coming from Birmingham area maybe? If so then you'd only need a 9 minute charge at a Supercharger (you could charge longer and get there with a higher % remaining if you wanted, but there's also Superchargers at Edinburgh anyway):

I get the point you're making, it's very valid regarding the cost to entry. However, the argument in this case was the ability to do 320 miles in an electric car. Which is absolutely achievable.
