Hmmm.
Have you read Iain McGilchrist? He has carried out long-term studies on left and right brain function (including very interesting studies of left and right brain stroke victims, and how they are affected). Fascinating stuff (of course Islander will tell you that's all been discredited years ago, but he's wrong; he's just out of touch). Of course there is still much to be learned on the topic, but as well as his professional qualifications and experience, McGilchrist is also a bit of a philosopher who is worth a listen to/read of.

Yeah, that was the guy I was thinking of. It's part of the whole "everything you thought you knew is wrong" theme: that memory is not about boxes of things it's about what not to remember Smile

I'm not holding out much hope for flying cars, men on Mars, Nuclear Fusion ("within 10 years" delusion) but I would hope to see a proper understanding of brain function within my lifetime.

Ooooh....(sucks teeth Laughing ).
Of course you realise that the human brain is the most complicated structure in the known universe?* Don't hold your breath!

*Well, some are Laughing

If you haven't already, Dr. Stuart Hameroff's work is worth checking out too. He has worked in conjunction with Prof. Roger Penrose on possible quantum brain function ideas - much of it theory at present, but very interesting nevertheless, and could lead to discoveries in the future. Hameroff's work relating to microtubules within the brain and elsewhere is particularly interesting.

That's rather depressing.

Islander is a perfect example of all that is wrong with political 'debate' today. Personal attacks on others whilst espousing no views or opinions of his own on actual points.

Tosh. I've debated many times and very rarely resort to ad hominem tactics - with the possible exception of Donk who utterly deserves it. I don't think I've ever attacked you personally as an example.

Easy-X thinks it was a personal attack? Poor lamb - he obviously can't recognise a bit of gentle leg pulling. The Rebel syndrome is obviously advancing. Sad Razz

When you leg-pull, you're not supposed to walk away with a bleeding limb in your hands Laughing

You have debated on technical matters, but your political debate is non-existent. That's when you most seem to resort to personal attacks. But you must understand, most of politics is just matters of opinion. There are very few definitive 'facts'. So you can't take the same scientific approach as you would to...er, science Smile Politicians would do well to learn that too.

I've stated my political position many times - I rarely debate politics here pretty much for the reasons you give,

Thing is, personal attacks with no explanation don't leave you (or anyone else) in a good light - I could live with them more if you stated why you disagree with someone first. But to walk in, in the middle of a discussion and just attack someone personally, with no other input...well, if you must you must, but yeah; doesn't look good. I say it because I see it a lot (don't mean just from you) and it moves nothing anywhere, completely pointless as well as distasteful. I would expect to be called out if I did the same.

Apologies for banging the same old thread-bare drum but without dialogue how would one know what the other sees? (Note sees not thinks.) "I'll keep it to myself" doesn't help anyone Sad

For instance why is nationalism a bad thing? (I'm assuming from the pairing with Neanderthal.) It seems perfectly fine when associated with Scottish independence Thinking

It's all about degree I think. I don't think nationalism per se is a bad thing. It doesn't necessarily sit in a vacuum anyway.

Observationally that seems to be the case. The only difference seems to be you're allowed to utilise nationalist rhetoric if furthers a victim-status narrative.

No surprise here:

Nord Stream 1: Russia shuts major gas pipeline to Europe [again]

On the bright side if the pipeline's shut off it's not like Germany are sending money to some mad dictator. At least oil doesn't have that problem...

ah, oh dear Sad

I'm assuming Ukraine had quite a lot of old Soviet-era tanks anyway and parts + knowhow are there to repair any captured vehicles Thinking

Oh and if you don't like graphs:

Ukraine: Captured Russian equipment makes up large proportion of Ukraine's weapons

Quote:
Over half of Ukraine's currently fielded tank fleet potentially consists of captured vehicles.

The failure of Russian crews to destroy intact equipment before withdrawing or surrendering highlights their poor state of training and low levels of battle discipline.

With Russian formations under severe strain in several sectors and increasingly demoralised troops, Russia will likely continue to lose heavy weaponry.

The battle for Kherson will be the one to watch. After retaking the city I'd speculate the Ukrainians might go straight for Crimea to really fuck over Putin.

Many factors have/are beating the Ruskies.

Conscription.
Unpreparedness. They were notbadvised they would invade Ukraine until they were ordered to invade Ukraine. They probably were doing military they way they do russian military. In a constant state of Being ready and willing to barter government supplied kit for ciggies, vodka, Porn, and etc.
When the column of equipment ground to a halt after rushing down the hill from Belarus with the whole world watching. It was most likely that the troops had traded all the 'invasion' diesel fuel in the tankers to the Belarusians in exchange for ciggies, vodka, Porn and etc.
Puttin has beem show to be a clown.

Have they tried paying the Russian soldiers to drop their guns and fuck-off? Either in cash or ciggies/vodka/porn.

Probably worth a try and cheaper than anti-tank rockets.

Im beginning to think Ukraine is a sideshow and nothing more than a lever to achieve the endgame of dividing the world along the same bipolar terms as the age of the cold war. That's what Putin really wants.
