Selling the VFR400 soon to up grade to a bigger main bike l,ve got a short list of a few bikes that l,m considering, if any one has any thoughts on them or any suggestions of others. My budget for the bike alone will be £1500 l,m generally looking for a older sports/sports tourer bike around the 80bhp+ mark and preferably not a Honda (had too many)

Nice enough sports tourer. Been around for ages. Build quality generally not bad but not that good. Cush drive rubbers wear out quickly.

Hot 600 sports bike. In 1985. Now dated. Be difficult to get decent tyres for it and by now the anti dive in the forks will have seized up.

Nutty bike, but a GPZ900R would be cheaper, better and faster.

Hope you like tank slappers.

I have one of these. Not a bad bike, but not really a sports tourer, as it was the most sporting of the 600s when new. Fairing works well. Engine is reliable. Parts are quite cheap from Yamaha.

All the best

From that list I would go for the FZR, there must be literally thousands of them out there. When I was at school the whole world and his father were riding them on L-plates with sidewinders attached.

The only one likley to outperform it would be the turbo....and you would need to be dedicated to run one of those.

That said, they are all older bikes, you might happen accross a low mileage, mint example of any one of them going for a song. When buying old bikes it is best not to be too focused on exactly what you want. It is best to go look at lots and be prepared to walk away from most of them, when you find 'the one' it usually jumps out at you....still walk away and have a think before you spend and get someone else to have a look at it with you.

I've got a FZR600, cracking bike, v.sporty even by today's standards, bit of a license looser but loads of fun to ride and very responsive.
