Hi all,

I've been scanning a lot of old family photos recently, and stumbled across a very old photograph of my grandfather, probably circa 1930 on an old motorcycle. Keen to identify it. I know next to nothing about classic motorcycles, but I expect someone here might be able to help. An old Royal Enfield of some sort, perhaps? I cant quite make out the badge on the tank. Any ideas?

You might have hit the nail on the head with that. Unsurprisingly I'd never heard of them. Any ideas on the model anyone?

Might be worth firing a post to the AJS & Matchless Owner's Club Forum at https://forum.jampot.com/

Here's a list of models :-

Thank you all. Yes, its certainly fascinating. It does look a lot like the AJS M5, I agree. As suggested I might also pop the picture up on the AJS forum. I'd like to know a bit more about them!

Thanks again all.

If his taste in bikes is anything to go by, I'd warrant that it's a Dunhill Billiard he's smoking as well.

An impeccable gentleman.

Thank you. Yes, I'd quite like somebody to look at photos of me on my bike in 90 years time and say the same thing. Can't picture it myself. Ha!

Thanks all.

I want a coat like he's wearing, presuming it's waxed cotton.
