Hi All, been struggling with starting the XT550. The spark is quite weak so I went to look at the CDI rotor side of the engine. When I removed the side casing, all the engine oil poured out. Should there be oil in there? If not, do I have a failed crankshaft seal?
Thanks for any help.......

Was there a gasket there? If so, the oil is probably supposed to be in there....

Would a pic kill ya?
Anyway I reckon the gasket is just to prevent dust water ingress and it shouldn't be bathed in oil so the crank oil seal sound like its not a seal any more

Something is not letting me attach a pic.......
Thanks anyway, to my mind it should all be dry in that side.
I’ll pull the rotor and see where the oil is getting in.

My XT660 derived bike had a wet alternator so I'd expect the 550 to have one too.

Most modern Japanese bikes have a wet alternator.

Nice, first thing I would have said is crank seal failure. Live and learn Smile

Weak spark I'd say look at the HT lead. How old is the coil? If it's all original I'd treat it to a new coil, lead, plug cap and spark plug.

Thanks everyone! HT lead, coil, plug cap, plug all new.
I think it must be designed to be wet. When I leaned the bike over to the left another load of oil spilled out very quickly - I guess the remains that were in the bottom of the crankcase. If it was a seal gone, it would have just dribbled out......

On reflection, I had it wrong it does run in oil.
Not sure what I was thinking of, probly a variator
now I is a scooty boi

Anyroadup shouldn't resistance tests be the the first step in
determining if the health of the stator/pulser?

Withe electronic ignition generally anything pulse side of the cdi or tdi either works or doesn't work. It's the lt/ht side that generally causes a weak spark.
