Saw something similar on the cycle track in Cable Street last year when working one weekend.

Brilliant if you step out in front of them suddenly, I saw the rider nearly faceplant himself, it did not like an emergency stop.

That and the two cyclists crashing when they looked up in panic and saw we had the cycle path fenced off and dug up kept me cheery during the pandemic.

Yeah stopping would be fun. Unsure how effectively they would corner too. Just bizarre. Sometimes just because someone comes up with an idea, doesn't make it a better one . . .

There's a bloke in my marina who runs around on a monowheeled thingy like this. Either hes very competant or it's easier than it looks because he stops, starts and manouevers without falling off the thing or even putting his feet down.

Still looks scary as fcuk though. Laughing

Why it doesn't "make sense" to look at is it leverages an active unstable system versus the passive stable systems like wot most ppl are familiar with (a car or motorbike doesn't do anything wildly unpredictable if you take your hands of the wheel/handlebars.)

They started doing this with fighter jets like the F16 with fly-by-wire years ago. Electric goes and you're flying a brick, no gliding out a landing for you, flight lieutenant! The advantage is you can pull off some more audacious manoeuvres which is why someone skilled with this mono-bike or the previous Segway looks so impressive.

Saw a guy absolutely flying up the cycle lane alongside the A13 on one of these last week, kitted out in motorbike gear, I reckon he must have been doing 35-40mph.

I've been seeing the occasional one wheeler around the city for a few years now but this thing was another level speed wise.

If the range is decent it would make a nifty commuter for somebody skilled enough, he was near the A406, if he kept that speed up he'd be to Canary Wharf in 15 mins or so.

And there's the whole problem. He was trying to get to Hangar Lane.

When I visited london I saw someone using something similar on the road. It looked fun but a normal e scooter is going to be more sensible.

Totally illegal though. No insurance tax or MoT no VOSA SVA no nothing. If it lets go (which they do) you've got a 50kg projectile hurtling down the road like a Barnes-Wallis bomb.
No issue with licensed sub 25 km/h personal transport but it ain't happening fast enough.

Digging into the specs of the mad monowheel cited as >80mph it has a 4,500W motor and 24Ah 126V battery. I used to run an eBike with a 1,500W motor and 12Ah 48V battery and got ~20 mile range out of it. If I were to have a stab at the monowheel's range you could at least hope for double that if run conservatively at city traffic speeds.

Biggest problem for me would be no seat. Would you fancy riding a dirt bike for 40 miles straight just standing on the pegs?

Why sub 25kph? A good cyclist will be going quicker than that. I like the S-pedelecs or whatever they're called, although they need to be registered as a moped here so it kinda negates the upside of cycling; using cycle lanes, one way exemptions for cyclists even though c**t cagers still drive at you cos "one waaaay" Rolling Eyes

Why sub 25kph? Al:

Yeah got the wrong I think.. 25kph/15mph limit is the current law for unregistered pedal assist electric bike. I believe. not that anyone obeys it.[/b]

Fuck that. What's next, licences for shoes?
We have this problem because they fucked up bike licensing and car insurance in the first place. Those devices also aren't totally illegal either.

The vast majority of people can't sprint at 15mph and almost nobody can do it for a sustained amount of time. Comparing apples and oranges I am afraid.

Simple matter of fact is that powered transport causes more serious injuries to pedestrians than another pedestrian simply sprinting into them.

Force can be equated by either mass multiplied by acceleration, or, by mass multiplied by (velocity divided by time). Simply put, as the mass cannot readily change: the higher the acceleration or the velocity then the greater force on impact.

This is the basis of why we have licensing requirements for powered vehicles - they cause more severe injury. So yes, these uni-cycles, e-bikes and e-scooters should all be licensed the same as motorcycles and cars. They cause more injuries and more severe injuries than would happen without them. This is balanced by improving the abilities of their users from untrained and miscognisant to (hopefully) more safe and vigilant.

I have nothing against the devices, the same as I have nothing against firearms. They are simply tools, it's how a person uses them that makes the difference in their safety. As such, I would make CBT compulsory for anyone using a bicycle (manual or powered), e-bike, e-scooter or any other form of powered, small form-factor, individual transportation device. There would be no requirement for a "full license", simply CBT under the existing regime for motorcycles. I would further make it compulsory that everyone using any of these devices have third party insurance and bear identifiable registration plates.

Have your devices, but have responsibility and culpability. Simple.
