Specifically food brands.
Has anyone switched because of rising prices?
I've noticed an abundance of Heinze beans, probably due to the arse-rapingly high prices.
I'm lucky enough to still be able to afford the things I like but I've switched to supermarket own brands out of principle really.
They're not quite the same but not bad enough for me to go back.

Heinz beans have gone woke and taste bland with a hint of artificial sweetener.
Most supermarket own brands are less than half the price and perfectly OK

We do 95% of our shopping in Aldi (have done for about 6 years now), as long as you squint whilst walking around, everything looks (and tastes) just like the big brand stuff, i'd even go as far as saying a lot of their stuff is higher quality, their steaks are amazing (though probably not to be bought if trying to tighen your belt)

I can't say the same for Lidl though, our local store, even though it is brand new, resembles a car boot sale, nothing seems to be in any order, stuff piled on top of stuff, genereally just a mess

At least with Aldi, once you get used to the layout (and the checkouts), they are all pretty much identical layout inside

Plus you can buy what ever assorted surf board/pizza oven/dining set/fire pit/bouncy castle from the mystery aisle........ what's not to like

I went for the cheaper options a long time ago. Some things will taste a little odd to begin with, but stick to them and you'll get used to them. You might even find yourself improving your diet as you go for the most unadulterated foods and add flavours as you see fit (sauces, herbs, spices etc). Some things I've gone back to the name brands, usually when they've been out of stock of the cheap options, and actually found I've come to prefer the cheap ones. Get over food brand snobbery, it's not worth it!

"Hand me a box of the Coco-Pops" (in Lidl)

No, dear, those are "Generic chocolate flavoured rice breakfast which have been carefully named for copyright reasons" Smile

As an aside I've found Tesco bran flakes to be just as good as Kellogg's but Sainsbury's effort is awful. And "I can't believe they even allude to butter in the name" spreads can be very disappointing.

I finally found one locally that works for me, largely by not having much flavour at all Laughing
I went through so many that had an overpowering buuterscotch-like flavour, only to find the very cheapest was the best solution. Although it's one thing where I'd much prefer to be using real butter from a local farm...way too expensive though.

Haven't bought Heinz in years, far too expensive and tastes crap compared to how it used to taste ... can't understand people who pay that amount of money for Heinz stuff!

Anyhoo, with regards beans ... Heinz bland as hell and £3.50 for four tins, Branston are good but again too expensive now at £2.50 for four tins ... Asda, £1.30 for four tins and just as good as Branston, far better than Heinz!!

Also, Heinz Tomato sauce at £3.50 for 910g ... Asda own brand at £1.00 for 970g ... every bit as tasty and at nearly a quarter of the price!

I have no idea who is buying the Heinz crap. It's totally senseless.

e.g. Tesco or Salisbury tinned soup about 50p (often have a tin for a lunch in the winter months) Heinz at least double and full of sugar. I do do most of the shop at Aldi but sadly their soups are pretty grim.

Aldi all day long, they do some 'french beer' in there which is fairly decent and cheap when compared to the equiv at other supermarkets!

I don't really care what I eat name wise, cant remember the last time I had Heinz Shocked make your own with some spicy bbq sauce in a saucepan. Laughing

Wifie won't have any other tomato soup except Heinz tinned. Rolling Eyes I've weaned her off Heinz beans though, it's own brands now. Dance!

Just checked with Tesco and Heinz BB work out at £2.11/KG 87p/tin
while the cheapo (Stockwell) cans I occasionally buy are 52p/Kilo 22p/tin
A very significant saving if you have a big bean munching fambly.
As mentioned, it's easy to spice them up a bit if you feel the need

As I is a not quite the fat bastard I used to be carb watcher nowadays,
I did a quick comparison of bog standard Heinz against pikey grade Stockwell beans

Stockwell 14.6% carbs 4.5% sugar 0.54% salt 4.4% Fibre
Heinz 12.5% carbs 4.7% sugar 0.6 % salt 3.7% fibre

Heinz wins on less carbs but loses in all other categories

On original over shop brands.
I always have bottle of Lea and Perrins Worcester sauce in the cupboard as none of the cheaper alternatives I've tried hit the mark.
It's not consumed on a daily basis and the bottle last for months
so I can live with the cost.
Its just got that unique taste

While I'm rantin on stuff I dont skimp on
Aspels RAW organic cyder vinegar with the mother
Kikkoman Soy sauce
Hellemans mayo
Encona chilli sauce

I use a lot of Stockwell products, mostly not bad. I always wonder how accurate the claimed levels of contents are on any brand though. Bet they're not particularly accurate.

Hellemans mayo

I originally switched to Tesco's own, then to Stockwell. Tried Tesco again recently when Stockwell was not so Wellstocked, and it tasted like vinegar. Couldn't wait to get back to the cheap one.
I did try a cheaper brand of tinned tomatoes, but found it to be all thin juice, so went back to Tesco's own, still not too dear.

Aldi mayo is loads nicer than Helman's imo. Less vinegary.

Lidl Earl Gray teabags, horrendous. Aldi Earl Gray teabags, perfectly acceptable (and the same price now, 89p)

Anyone tried the puff pastry steak pie from Aldi's? It's better than a lot of butcher efforts I've tried at twice the price.

If only I could suffer drinking Aldis whisky.

I gave up on Heinz baked beans years ago. For whatever reason they just got bland, or perhaps my taste changed.

Googling ''Branston beans'', they do sell them in the Czech republic. I might give them a go. They ask £1,05 for a 410g can. Heinz's 415g can of baked beans goes for £2,35 at my local Tesco's. Thinking

Good grief, those prices are ridiculous! Are they generally representative of food prices in the CR?

Obviously. A dog will go hungry until it realizes it has no choice but to put up with it, a woman will just buy her own food or find a man that isnt a cheap bastard.
