I'm surprised at how sad I am about it. She did share a lot of traits with my own maternal grandmother. A similar dress sense, a similar smile, a similar stubbornness and determination to continue doing what she's always done.

King Charles sounds weird.

I'm betting the funeral will be a week Saturday 17th and no day off for us commoners. Too early to speculate on "Charlies got a fancy new hat" day, but I wouldn't be surprised if it was next spring. Liz_2.0's coronation was 4 months after her old man popped his clogs.

Before Meghan and Harry, I wasnt too keen on royalty. They taught me the value of not being annoying.

The Queen may have been a bit old fashioned, and a bit expensive, but she was never annoying.

Charles won't be as annoying as Meghan, but I think it's just a matter of time before he starts becoming annoying with various opinions.

The Queen knew her place which was to smile sweetly, and be dignified.

I suspect that being a King could go to Charles's head.

I'm reminded of Lord of the Rings, but that's probably taking it a bit far.

If he has learnt anything from his mother, I hope it's to be at all times dignified and unbiased, as Head of State he isn't really allowed a public opinion, that's not his place, he is meant to represent all his subjects equally and not take any side.

You're slightly behind the curve there, hasn't been a thing about Royal ascension and divorce since Henry VIII created the Church of England in 1534.

That's the problem I'm not convinced that he has learnt the lessons you speak of.

He's not a politician though he doesn't represent the people.

He represents the people now, more than any politician and more than at any time in his life.

He can try and put his stamp on things, but he needs to do it in a much more subdued way than he may have done in his past, his life has changed now, his way of public thinking must be different.

Having said that, he has time to consider his position and he can always take a leaf out of his Great Uncle's book and abdicate, should it be 'decided' that might be the thing to do.

I don't think he is going to abdicate. He has been waiting for this moment all his life.

I'd like him to but he won't in the immediate future.

Kinda correct, she was the divorcee and he abdicated because he was told the marriage would not be accepted by the church or the people. So he abdicated. He could have stayed and married her anyway but chose love over upsetting the nation and ruling as king.

Edward was reputedly a Nazi sympathiser and more interested in being a playboy than a king. The reaction to Wallace Simpson might have been the perfect opportunity to run away from his responsibilities, and the nation was probably better off without him. He dropped his younger brother right in it but George turned out to be better-suited.
