Notably speeding - "do you know how fast you were going?" - if you say 'no, sorry, thought I was within the limit' then the onus is on popo to prove what speed you were doing by whatever means; also relies on calibration of instruments etc so just maybe you'll avoid being clobbered, which is a dead cert if you say "yep, 85 mph" |

I wish more people would just shut the fuck up and don't blab to the police. It is their job to prove your guilt, it's not your job to prove your innocence. Anyone reading this, please take this advice it is fucking golden:
If the police are asking you questions: shut the fuck up! Just say you don't answer questions without legal representation. Then if you actually get fucking taken in and even if your lawyer is there, answer fucking everything with "no comment" even if they ask you if you want a cup of tea it's "no comment".
However, it is a fine balancing act and there are exceptions. If you've done something where you are going to be fucked dead to rights for hooning it at 100mph then shut the fuck up. If you get caught doing 35mph in a 30mph you might get away with it with a small amount of bootlicking. The police typically have unwarranted self-importance issues and a small amount of bootlicking and satisfying their egos will likely get you off with very minor infractions. ____________________ PRESENT: 2018 BMW S1000XR SE Sport.

I got pulled the other day for the first time in years. For context, the route was like this - Roundabout -> 50 limit for about 3/4 of a mile -> 40 limit for a few hundred meters -> 30 limit (through a village and where I stopped) -> 40 limit -> NSL (and one of my favorite roads).
I'd come off the roundabout, and as this was the first bit of clear road I'd seen in miles, I gave the bike some stick up through the gears. As I approached the 40, I let the bike coast down, and I could see a white SUV flying up behind me. Didn't know it was the police at first, but I already had a feeling. So by the time I hit the 30 I'm doing bang on the speed limit and I've got a cop car sitting 3 feet from my number plate. No lights on. This continued into the village. I really didn't want them behind me on one of my favorite roads, and I needed to sort out my music anyway, so I pulled over in a layby. And they pulled in behind me. Here we go...
Police - "Why did you pull over?"
Me - "Sorting my music out"
Police - (He seemed a bit surprised that I had an immediate answer, but he rallied) "You weren't doing 50 in that 50 limit"
Me - ...
Police - "You weren't doing 40 in that 40 limit either"
Me - ...
Police - "You did stick to the 30 though"
Me - "I always do"
Police - "Do you have your license on you?"
Me - "Yeah, hang on" - At this point I've already accepted I'm going to be here for a bit, so I switched the bike off, got my lid off, handed over my license. Then they asked me all the standard stuff (Bike yours? Insurance and MOT? Points? etc.). I'm all legal so I wait around while they check me out. They don't want me to sit in the car, so I'm already feeling like I'm probably not getting nicked unless there's something wrong on the paperwork side.
Police - "Well you seem like a decent guy, pay your taxes that sort of thing. We probably wouldn't have stopped you, but lots of people stop when they have police behind them because they have something to hide"
Me - ... (I considered telling him that no-one likes having the police behind them, but there's really no point)
Police - "Anyway, stick to the limit in the 30s and 40s. It's the 30s that we really care about and you did that. I'm not going to check the bike over because we're not traffic cops." (They were dressed in tactical gear like a SWAT team, no tasers or indications they were firearms or anything though. Is tactical gear just normal for cops now?)
And that was it. I gave them 5 minutes to bugger off before I got back on the bike, and took it easy in case they decided to hang about somewhere, but I didn't see them again. Not a very exciting story, but I thought it might be useful as an insight into the attitudes of the police. And also that while having a general approach of shutting your mouth is a good one, maintaining a stoney silence throughout is definitely going to mean you fail the "attitude test" and have them dicking you about as much as possible. It's a bit of a minefield really, trying to get the balance right, and the cops play this game all day every day, so they get a lot more practice than we do. ____________________ Current - '94 VFR750FR, '00 VFR800FI Previous - '10 Street Triple R, '92 MZ ETZ301, '05 TTR250, NSR125R, KMX125, "Honda" Win (chinese copy of an old Honda design with a C90 engine)
