Bloody popups

Another question from the resident IT idiot.

I use Firefox as my browser but every so often Internet Explorer (or edge or whatever its called) throws up a panel of news and other sh1t. It'll happen randomly every few hours and sometimes only stays up for seconds before dissapearing. Other times sits there for what seems like minutes which isn't much good if I'm playing a game or doing something important (like watching porn).

Anything I do doesn't seem to have any effect on it going. If I click on it (theres no X) it just opens up IE in a new window.

Is there some way to turn it off?

Do you have the "news and interests" enabled on the taskbar? If so, turn it off. (Right click the taskbar - news and interests - turn off, or at a bare minimum turn off the "open on hover" option)
