Annoyingly a few of the LEDs in the tail light cluster of my MT09 have stopped working. Rather than fanny about trying to re-solder some new ones in or something, Im pondering replacing the unit with something like this

Now my understanding of the MOT regs is that motorbike rear indicators must be a minimum of 180mm apart, so I reckon that unit in itself would fail an MOT. But if I keep the original indicators in the position they're in now, would that be acceptable to pass on MOT?

Worst case I just dont bother connecting the turn signal wire and have it as brake light only, but I quite like the look of it as indicators too.

Do the MOT with just the brake/running light connected, and reconnect the signals after?

How much of the original light has failed? If 50% or more of the LEDs are still working then it should pass anyway. However I see no reason that the replacement should fail if you keep the original indicators, but those combined units just don’t do it for me and are illegal for a good reason.

Only 4 of the LEDs in a cluster of like 30 have failed, but its annoying to know its there Razz its more that replacing the entire unit seems like a lot less hassle than trying to open up the factory one and try to re-solder some new LEDs onto it.

I'd be keeping the original indicators on it as it would look stupid without plus theyre the nice Yamaha upgraded ones that double up as extra tail/running lights.

You know when something is so obvious, you just totally overlook it? Laughing this is probably the easiest surefire solution, assuming I remember to change it before the MOT.

9 times out of 10 it's not the LEDs themselves that have failed but a bad solder joint cracking after years of vibration. A dab with fresh solder might sort the problem.
