I was going to do this so people could comment/praise/ condemn Kier's plan for the future. Labour to fund a 'Green Growth Superpower' and invest in the NHS amongst other things but then a Labour MP made it much more interesting by shooting herself and the party in the foot.

Labour MP Rupa Huq has been suspended from the parliamentary party pending an investigation after she called the chancellor "superficially" black.

"He's superficially, he's, a black man but again he's got more in common... he went to Eton, he went to a very expensive prep school, all the way through top schools in the country. If you hear him on the Today programme you wouldn't know he's black."

What is wrong with these people. Why does it matter that a black man went to a posh school and doesn't talk like a Jamaican gangster. I woould have thought that was worthy of praise, not ridicule.

She really wanted to call him an Uncle Tom I expect
Because he's the wrong sort of black.

It's "we need a Black chancellor not a black chancellor!" Like I repeat ad nauseum Idris Elba's a black actor not a Black actor.

Concisely, post-modernist critique is a system of redefining words.

Yes, yes, keep ignoring the fact that the Tory's are giving fuck loads to rich people whilst at the same time pretending to give a tax break to poor people when in reality without the usual rise in the tax free allowance they will be worse off.

And at the same time to exceed Boris's covid relief stuff with no plans to recover the cost which will mean massive savings in expediture will be needed elsewhere.

I really hope your gran doesn't need a hip replacement.

Apologist BS again.

Labour should be shooting fish in a barrel and that's not even a new position for them to be in. How many opportunities to be a credible opposition do they need to spurn by their own infighting and dumping of their traditional voter base.

I don't think it's particularly outrageous to have top rate of tax back to where it was throughout the last labour government, especially when having our rate lower than many other countries actually yielded record breaking income as more big spenders moved or stayed here.

When you say "Tory" the Left sees:

So none of you can refute the 1% reduction in tax actuallly meaning a tax rise because of no increase in the tax free allowance and inflation?

Okay, I have to admit I'm slightly wrong.

'In the Budget of March last year, the Chancellor announced that it will be frozen at this level until 2025-2026. Most people will only pay tax on anything they earn above this personal allowance threshold.'

It's actually reducing the pain that the previous tory government was going to apply.

TBH, 5p in the pound will have no effect on people who earn £150k a year.

Nobby, tell us what you think of what has been said at the Labour conference so far, about Labour's plans.
What, for e.g., do you think of the pledge to be off fossil fuel dependency by 2030? Anything else?

I can't say I took much notice (apart from no new taxes on beer) but the Beeb has been wall-to-wall with the White Supremacy party and how they'd eat tax the rich.

I tink the Torys have royally fucked up with their tax, but we have already commented on all that.

This thread was for the Labour party conference. The Labour party that Starmer has already quoted Blair as being back to the centre or words like it.

I want people thoughts on their policies because lets be honest, thay haven't actually had any yet. They are very much - Tory is bad, vote for us and they are still saying it today.

the public must never forgive the Tories for "crashing" the economy.

Fair enough, but tell us what you'd do, and no, tax the rich won't fund everything.

All you are doing Nobby is what they are doing, slagging off the Tories without giving any real insight to what they would do and how they would pay for it. You never know I might even vote Labour next election if they make enough sense.

This. Come on Nobby, everybody is bored with the Tory-slagging to distract from the fact that Labour are not a credible party for government. I have criticisms of the Tories too, but it's getting tedious when that's all you do. It's not a very stimulating conversation. What of Labour's policies?

The other Blair quote was that Labour are “the political wing of the British people.” Silly sod. So who keeps voting the Tories in?

This is presumably the same Labour party who left a note behind in the treasury office when they last left government reading "I'm afraid there's no money"?

Wasn't that caused by the run on the banks due to de-regulation of the mortgage market?

I think that it was more likely to have been caused by them spending money like scummers on Giro day.

The Labour infighting has started already.

Labour left vow fight-back after Starmer speech. "When the party we all represent and campaign for every single day turns on its own, and says we don't want socialists in our party anymore, we didn't bow down and cower away, we said we're going to fight," says the Labour MP for Ilford South, Sam Tarry.

They certainly didn't like KS saying "We are the party of the centre-ground,"

They just cannot seem to patch up their differences and KS hasn't got the power to keep them in check like Blair did.

Why don't they just split? Sooner they do it, the sooner one or other can make some progress to becoming electable (and we all know it won't be the far left loony bit). They're certainly not going to get anywhere with this Jekyll and Hyde thing going on.

Yes, I believe Gordon Browns de-regulation of the financial markets so people could borrow money with no clear idea of how they were going to pay it back was a major contributing factor.
