So, I go with Russia. |
Before I went for that choice, I'd want to know a couple of things:
What kind of revenues are Russia going to lose from this, and will it affect their war fighting effort to lose them?
Yes, they lose revenues by deliberately turning off the taps to Europe, but it's somewhat less permanent, easy for them to regulate, and they get something out of it by pressuring the EU. This act, if act it is, loses them that option. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Hmmm. Russia has power over Europe because of its mineral wealth. Ask the Germans.
I don't think it's a question of them being irrational, just they rationalise differently to us. Russians definitely don't see themselves as the same as us, politically or culturally, and I think that's where your statement comes from - assuming that they do.
Power games and struggles are not necessarily irrational. Sometimes unwise, but the lure of power over others isn't just a Russian trait. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

You're still thinking as a western European. It's not easy for me either, but I have read a fair bit about Russia, and they really don't see things the same way as us, Putin or otherwise. Their experience in history has been very different to ours for a very long time.
For one thing, they remember how western "cooperation" royally screwed them over after the end of the Cold War, and that's just recent history with us. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

How so? |
Western corporations effectively stealing mineral wealth among other things. Very shabby deals for the Russkies at the very least. That's how I read it anyway.
But that's a side track. The Russian mentality is different to ours. That's the point. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Interesting.
