Are you offering enough money? I don't know what the going rate is for that kind of work. However, an opportunity to travel probably translates as: "we could send you anywhere, so you have to travel and be willing to relocate". 37.5 hours contracted, but let's face it, the employee will have to work for longer. Clean up, etc. Travel all paid for but the time spent travelling doesn't count towards the contracted 37.5 hours, probably. Bridge/oil rig/stadium means dangerous and physically demanding work, sometimes outdoors, in all kinds of weather? Dealing with heavy equipment means you have to pick it up sometimes?

Honestly, I just think the job is what it is, is seen as undesirable and difficult, no "perks" count for anything, so just offer more dough.

TBH, the going rate for an entry level technician with no qualifications is £16k-£22k at a push. We have advertised from £20k to £35k.

The travel allowances mean that you can earn six figures (like I did when I was 25 with no degree) if you are stationed abroad for a long period of time.
You are paid from the time you step out your door when travelling anywhere that is not the normal workshop/office location with all expenses covered.
This is not labourer work either. We are on site as technical experts and the local labour do the physical work.

So no, the pay is fine and I think if we got the right wording and the right eyeballs on the job advert, it should appeal to lots of people. I have actually re-written the job ad today, copying a large chunk from some examples I got through PM (thanks again for that), so I am hoping it makes the job seem more approachable to entry level candidates.

As above, I think two things jump out at me;

1) Asking for absolutely no quals might put off someone with moderate quals thinking "it's beneath them". I would imagine some basic quals might be useful, e.g. GCSEs in English and maths/physics? I'd rate the latter as potentially being quite useful in that role.

2) The travel thing would put me off straight away (with wife and kid). Realistically, it will appeal to those who either don't have a significant other/close group of friends/strong ties to an area, or those who are trying to purposefully avoid their significant other. Even with that satisfied, travel isn't for everyone - some will be wary of "unknown lands" etc.. - assuming the work isn't expected to be in far flung corners of the globe for months on end, I would suggest outlining the probable pattern, e.g. "most work in X area of UK, occasional sites in Europe or America" or something like that, and make it clear what the expenses/coverage package is when working away.

Recruitment is a pain at the moment; I'm trying to get someone (admittedly specialist) and it's challenging to say the least, but I think a combination of low levels of unemployment and economic uncertainty (so people are possibly wary of jumping ship for fear of landing on one with a hole in it). If it makes you feel better, I've had maybe 10 serious applicants in 3 months, 3 that were half decent and 3 interviewed but still no luck.

Good luck with the hunt anyway!
