Don't be silly, you don't have anything anyone else wants. Stick to your full gaelic then, and then the rest of us don't have to bother trying to understand the nothing you have to say.

Nope.

"Today most archaeologists and historians believe that Gaelic in Dál Riata developed among the native population out of the common Proto-Celtic language of the British Isles. Close sea communications with Ireland and the substantial land barrier of the Scottish Highlands to the east contributed to Proto-Celtic in Dál Riata developing into Gaelic rather than into Pictish or Cumbric as it did east and south of the Highlands"

Norn was spoken in Orkney, Shetland and Caithness. Not Brythonic either.

Chaps, we appear to have veered off-topic..

Let me add 'Architect' when used as a verb.

WTF is wrong with the word 'Design'?

Just one of those things with any specialised area - programming, engineering, mathematics etc. - people with start using terms slightly inappropriately until a colloquialism develops. This is a form of Gatekeeping to keep the muggles at bay.

For example, "triple tree" vs "fork yokes" tells you everything about the person you're conversing with and their source of information learnings Wink

If you wanted a job in computer programming you'd need to bander about words and phrases like agile, pair programming, scrum master, cadence, user stories, source control, pull requests... (fnarr, fnarr.)

Scrum master actually comes from project management.

Interestingly, as someone who has taken to the field of combat a few times, albeit not that recently and never with any degree of competence, it's not a term I recognise.. 'Pack Leader' yes, 'Scrum Master' nope.

It's from a type of agile project management called, strangely enough, Scrum. A Scrum Master is described as a facilitator which should tell you all you need to know about Scrum.

Facilitator is my word for the thread today. Bastards.

Computer projects - especially at large corporates - seem to lap the shit up. People spend more time fussing over the metrics* than doing any actual work Sad

Metrics can be useful. Obsessing over them rarely is though.

The idea of agile project management isn't necessarily a bad idea - we use Prince 2 a lot at work and it's often too unwieldy for smaller projects so when the idea of Scrum came up it looked like it might be useful. The problem is that it appeals to a certain type of middle manager way too much.

The course I went on, one of our potential PMs applied up for the training (think Gordon Brittas-esque character). The fucker rocked up with not one but TWO packs of scrum cards that he'd bought for it. That's the type that lives to be a 'facilitator' and ruins the potential efficiency gains from the method by burying it in documentation. Bastard.

Progressive. An old word that seems to be having a bit of a resurgence. I don't trust anyone who refers to themselves in this way.

Apologies that this isn't really thread related but what do you think of pair programming? Everyone has fibre these days so almost zero lag in Teams to work on stuff (even though the other guy in Vancouver!) but I dunno, something about remote working just destroys it for me Thinking

You spent too much time negotiating with Egyptians for fuel oil.

I think facilitator came from Murica in the same Seacon as all their other new-speak.

In my case it was an NHS nurse, In her desperation to try to make herself sound intelligent she actually called nappies for a four year old 'toileting facilitators'.

"Tearing Down" something like an engine or machine for example. A hamfisted twat would tear it down. However, someone with skill would dissasemble it.

The Murikahnz I have the misfortune of working with use that exclusively.

The use that terminology coz they feel it makes them appear clever. Shocked
