Hello,
Dumb question, my rear axle nut is rounded from wear and I need to get a new one. Can I use any nut that has the same size and pitch? Can I get it from any retailer of nuts and bolts like Screwfix, or is it better to get it from a specialist motoring supplier? Asking as it's a safety critical part that gets lots of stress and abuse and need to make sure I get it right.

Unlikely to be a standard pitch what bike is it?

The good news is it won't need to be anything special. Ordinary mild steel nut of the correct pitch will be fine.

What might be tricky from an ordinary nut and bolt supplier is getting the retention system if it has one, be that locking or castellated.

It's an MOT fail if it's supposed to have one and doesn't.

The nut is likely a self-locking nut, or else a nut with a hole for a cotter pin, for safety reasons.

If you state what bike it is, it will be easy find the right nut.

Use cmsnl.com to find the part number, if you don't want to say.

If you know the thread and pitch you can simply purchase from eBay and others.
If you don't know the pitch:
Find an engineer's (machine shop)
And they can determine that.
They may have a bit or can spin one off for you.

It's not rocket surger.

That would only fail if the spindle were drilled but no pin inserted I think.

Ok, is this for a YBR250 (you've posted about one before)?

In which case it's a flanged, M24x1.5 self-locking nut. So no, you wont be able to get one from a normal fittings stockist. I found a few that would do on specialist fittings sites but they are double the cost of just buying the correct OEM part.

It's Yamaha part number 9560714200 which will set you back a whole ten pounds (delivered) from Fowlers. Or you should be able to order one from any dealer using that part number, they use it on several different bikes.

If you'd said which bike it was for instead of leaving a detective game, you'd have got a faster and corerect reply right away.

Sorry I forgot to add it is a YBR250 (2009). I'll take a look at the link for an OEM part (couldn't find it on web search myself).
