Looking at a bike which has a speedo in Kmh (Japanese import). Is this allowed for an MOT or must it be in Mph?

Thanks for any help.

I've had bikes MOT'd that had km/hr speedos and not received any failed tests, nor advisories.

Supposed to have MPH calibrations (hence the plethora of horrible stickers on a lot of grey imports), in practice most testers don't give a fuck.

Speedo isn't checked on a motorcycle MOT...

I passed a MOT with a speedo that was smashed to bits and clearly not working - as said above, the speedo is not tested. However, this doesn't mean you are road legal because the vehicle still has to meet C&U Regs.

I recall applying stickers which came from a magazine onto the speedo on my grey-import Yamaha XJR400 back in the late 90s but even now no one checks accuracy. The on-line MOT regs suggest the speedometer simply has to work, and be lit if necessary.

A pair scissors and you can place them were you want. Fancy boasting about doing a ton down the High Street, easy!

Seriously, as long as you can cut them cleanly and stick them in place, and roughly accurate is all you'll really need, then the adapt what you can actually get a hold of route isn't too bad an option. Make then out of something that contrasts with the original size & colour and you eyes will soon learn to read the MPH and disregard the KPH.

If you have a decent inkjet printer you could probably go down the "print your own labels" route and print a large, transparent label and do a really nice job. Some inkjets even let you print metallic ink e.g. silver on clear would look great.

I'd be tempted to disasemble the unit and repaint the face of the dial and paint/label my own numbers.

When I had a bike with a km/h speedo, it was cable operated so I fitted one of those little 1.6:1 reduction gearbox thingies on the back of the speedo which makes the km/h reading into mph. Then stuck a mph sticker over where it said km/h.

I bought a Suzuki Inazuma last year, I noticed the mileage on the MOT was higher than the mileage on the bike.

After some thought I realised that the battery must have been disconnected at some point.

It seems if you disconnect the battery on this bike the speedo defaults to Kilometres.

When I put it in for an MOT I made sure the clock was set to MPH, nothing was mentioned
on the day and the DVLA haven't been in touch so I assume all is okay. AT least I have a logical explanation.

The DVLA wont be in touch because it's no concern of theirs. It's not illegal to have an incorrect odometer reading. One of my bikes is on its 4th speedo so while it's reading about 9,000 miles, it's really done ten times that much. The mileage shown on the MOT history is all over the place.

What would be illegal is selling a vehicle and representing an incorrect odometer reading as genuine.

For the last two years my van's MOT tester has recorded the mileage as 'unknown', because ever since I replaced the non-functioning speedo with one from the scrappers the odometer has displayed a line of dashes. All perfectly legal Thumbs Up

I put tape over the odometer reading on my turbo bike so the MOT tester had to record 'unknown' The reason was when I first insured it after building the turbo I was limited to 1500 miles a year in the first year, 3000 in the second and third.
