Nope it's not - apart from the people that depend on it for their livelihood and they're a lot fewer than before.

Don't pretend you care. No virtue points to be had here.
No one cares if Musk is good at business or not. What's important to everyone who comments are his politics, and views about free speech; that's why they give him stick.
He would open up the political conversation, far wider than it was on Twitter before he bought it. And there's the rub, isn't it? Can't have people who disagree with the current political "correctness" trends speaking their minds Laughing

Reinstating Trump at this stage has got to be akin to offering a drowning man a drink of water - suppose I ought to clarify that for the instances of this example that Twitter is the drowning man. Laughing

Perhaps it would be more in context to say that it is like using a quadriplegic to rescue a drowning man. Laughing

People losing their livelihood for any reason is never a good thing.

If you think it's negligible then you really ought to question your own values.

If it dies then Mastodon will take its place. It's open source, no big corporations, just a bunch of servers with federated data run by enthusiasts.

There were those conversations between Musk & Dorsey early on suggesting open source, federated was the way to go. Dorsey definitely views himself as the Oppenheimer of social media: "now I am become death, destroyer of brain cells" Smile

I haven't delved into Mastodon but even on the surface it's easy to see it isn't Twitter. For a start it's missing the digital equivalent of an aristocracy and any way to force people how to think.

Let me know all about it when you're in that position yourself.
I'm sure you think about those laid off from Twitter all the time.
Personally, I think it might benefit them, given the way they think about others, and besides, losing a job isn't the end of the world, there are always others.
But sorry, still no virtue points for you.

Oh it's missing all of those 'helpful' algorithms that tell people what they must want to read.

Someone from the Twitter development team turned up on Mastodon today telling everyone how the reverse chrono timeline was a bad thing and didn't work as well as suggesting a few Twatterish mods. The responses were amusing although quite polite. Laughing

Mastodon has more than 7,700 servers to choose from so where do you even start looking for what that someone from the Twitter dev team has posted?

Well adding the right hashtags is a good start...

#infosec #informationsecurity #cyber #cybersecurity would be a good start.

The right instance can help although you don't have to be on it to see posts.

Social Media AI has spent too long conditioning users to just consume content.

He's an awful person because he's been through an experience that dehumanised him (being put in a coma by a gang of kids that stomped his head, while in school). That's what gave him his contemptible character and misanthropic tendencies. He's also played fast and loose with the truth, in business, many times.

By the most bizarre of coincidences, the above all makes him the perfect guy to reform and rebuild Twitter. I think his moves so far have been spot on. I also think his personal habits and background make him more inclined towards free speech. Also think he isn't down with the gang or the cool kids, and has what it takes to kick them in the nuts. No sympathy for those who've lost the jobs they used to occasionally attend (driving past California's homeless, to attend meetings on how normal people like the rest of us could be shadowbanned or re-educated or deplatformed or cancelled to the point of not expressing views contrary to XR, PETA, JSO, etc.) Musk is the right guy to fuck them properly.

He had a wealthy privileged childhood. He behaves like the spoiled brat he probably was.

A lot of people that have a better grasp of the situation than either of us disagree. Time will tell though.

If they were all slackers then Twitter will be fine and we can all go back to blissfully ignoring it, just as we did before Musk bought it.

"80% of the work is done by 20% of the people." Twas ever thus...

The problem with whaling and culling is figuring out who the 20% are. Someone with talent knowing they can get another job straight away might take the severance package as a nice little bump and wander off whereas the shirkers hang on like grim death even with the "sleep in the office" directive.

For anyone who's missed it - and given the MSM won't mention it that's a fair chance - apparently pre-Musk Twitter was in the pay of the FBI. The agency dedicated almost a hundred staff to squashing dissent on social media. Not bad for a country with free speech explicitly written into its constitution.

There's a word for state and enterprise working hand in glove to oppress the people... hmm... I think it begins with 'f' Thinking

Are you seriously surprised that an agency like the FBI involves itself with social media? Better not look too closely at GCHQ then. Laughing

Back on topic, Musk has been suspiciously quiet since his "should I step down" poll bit him on the arse. Claims of voting interference incoming in 3... 2... 1... Laughing
