Surprised there's been no mention of this here. Everybody happy with it then?

Conversely, if you got royally fucked up the arse would you want to talk about it? I'm sure it'll be fine when the shock wears off. Laughing

Given the popularity of the "grinds my gears" thread, I thought BCFers would be leaping at the chance to have a whinge about it Laughing

Being pretty much outside of the tax system myself (outside of pretty much everything for that matter), it doesn't mean much to me, but I doubt they'd have been able to do anything much different; "The Markets", doncha know.

Still, interested to hear everyone's particular gripes Smile

Considering that the Tories don't have a great track record when it comes to doling out benefits I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the social welfare part of the statement is not nearly as generous as they'd like people to believe. As someone in the system, would you consider that a fair observation?

I'll errr... not be so colourful in my description but it's like asking "what about this weather, eh?" You can pass comment on it but you can't affect it, it on the other hand can certainly affect you and yours.

Douglas Adams wrote:
"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."

"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."

"I did," said Ford. "It is."

"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't people get rid of the lizards?"

"It honestly doesn't occur to them," said Ford. "They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates to the government they want."

"You mean they actually vote for the lizards?"

"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."

"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"

"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard," said Ford, "the wrong lizard might get in. Got any gin?"

There's no real right answer. He's done something. There isn't a magic bullet here, it's a shit sandwich and nothing will make it palettable.

I don't think there was anything fundamentally wrong with the last one either. Certainly from the point of view of normal people, it was probably a good idea. What banjaxed the last one was traders who had over-extended their credit in speculative investments kicking up a shitstorm and creating a situation in the markets where the government HAD to back down.

I don't see labour coming up with any better ideas. You can bet your bottom dollar whatever they would do would include way more tax.

What annoys me is the lack of intelligent, long-term thinking about how to deal with things like the energy issues. Like, I got my last two months electricity for free. Not that I'm complaining about free money but I personally didn't actually need that. They could have invested a lot of the money they're spending paying peoples electric bills in national renewables infrastructure which would have had a long list of long term benefits including lower energy prices, less reliance on imported energy, less carbon output and capital expenditure is a good way of creating employment and stabilising stagnation.

Same goes for the windfall tax. It'll be splurged on short-term sticking plasters when it could have been invested in domestic energy production like grants for solar panels on houses and building offshore windfarms.

Hell, I think it's time for a nationalised renewable energy company. Then they can get the infrastructure down and will have the ability to dump cheap electricity into the grid. We're not in the EU now so we can do shit like that if we want. They can sell it off further down the line once the situation stabilises.

Change "windfall tax" to "mandated research into renewables" and you'd have something palatable to all sides. But no, the chancellor would want all the money in his pot so he can lord it over all the other departments, learnt that one from Yes, Minister Smile
