According to the article he was a repeat offender.
Maybe they should have doubled his sentence.

C*nts like him are a good case for Corporal punishment!

Have to wonder how long the car had been in the oncoming lane for - ie is it something they could have avoided if they were looking far enough down the road, or did the car literally swing around the van just before the impact? Hard to tell with that video.

Fucker still needs the book thrown at him harder than that though, and a lifetime ban from driving.

FTFY Neutral

I recall an interview with a prison psychologist and after a long discussion on punishment vs rehabilitation the question was "well, what does work?!" And the answer was "time" as in the best you can hope for is for criminal young men to turn into sensible old men. Statistically that plays out.

After a certain point of repeat offending one would have to conclude there are people about with no regard for society who'll never change their ways no matter the amount of resources lavished on them.

Exile or death.

If he was so out of it on drugs no matter how harsh the law and punishment would make no difference just like getting in car after ten pints.
The repeat offender part is most worrying aspect as we might be more understanding of a one off splurge.

So their lives are changed forever, then, just like that.

Justice system defective, and the culprit looks like a product of that defective system. It's all over his face. When there are no real consequences to serious crime, you get people like that. He'll come out and continue his life as a self-employed boiler engineer or something, enjoying a line or two with his boys down the pub, as per his habit. That's how he lives his life. Nothing will change for him. It's getting harder and harder to ignore the fact that any semblance of normality, morality, restraint, respect, etc. in society is just a fevered imagining, at this point. Would be nice to have a sentencing system that isn't just a bad joke.

The convictions that he's had, he's done it more than once, over 60 odd convictions and still continuing to drive the road and this is what he did,' said Mrs Amner.

That’s quite a lot of repeating! Shocked

This is the result of a car is king world.

See it a lot with incidents involving cyclists getting seriously injured or killed often. Driver is given a short or suspended sentence and minimal driving ban. Seems as though it is literally impossible to be banned for driving forever which is absurd.

The punishment for driving offences is almost non-existent. If you ever want to kill someone just 'accidentally' run them over. Most lenient sentence you can get.

30 months Neutral

The guy that knocked me off, put me in a wheelchair and drove off whilst high, drunk on a disqualified licence got 18 days... down from 30 because he was good.

It is pretty dire that you can nearly kill someone and walk free, but you can threaten to stab someone and get in more trouble Rolling Eyes

This is the big one for me. I think it's a bit different from the argument about how many weeks/months/years an offender deserves to get put in prison for. We're all familiar with that, and the pros and cons. But I cannot understand how it can be that someone can repeatedly drink/drug-drive, get multiple convictions for dangerous driving or even death by dangerous driving, and yet still retain the right to get back behind the wheel in due course.

What you do with individuals who drive while banned is a whole different discussion.

The drug driver has issues.
Lay off him.
Give him a chance to rehab during his custodial sentence for almost killing people.

It's maybe the difference in who presents the case for the prosecution, the judge and how much room there is in jail.

One doesn't need a gun in UK, a car can do much more damage and the penalties are misdemeanour.

Judging from the lane position of the bike in the still frame (centre of lane), they saw nothing and a split second later were hit. The impact on the car was to the off side front wing and bonnet. Seems like he pulled out from behind the van and they had no chance to react.
