Looks pretty weird on google maps - volcano with circular nature reserve of ancient forest around it.

That's typical of a stratovolcano that's undergone one or more cone collapses. The cone of s stratovolcano builds up layer by layer as eruptions proceed often leading to remarkably symmetrical structures - think Mount fuji in Japan.

Because the cone is built of eruption layer on eruption layer, they can be unstable and seismic activity associated with magma movements can cause the cone to collapse and that's what forms the odd circular ring plain that surrounds the cone itself. The cone will rebuild after collapse as long as the volcano remains active.

Volcanos are amazing things Very Happy

Is it because the material expelled from a volcano is especially fertile?
