Bit late to the party, but I’ve had my meteor nearly a year now and it’s great.

Couple of niggles
1 lights are shit
2 it’s not fast.

2 wasn’t a surprise, it’s a 350, but it’s not been an issue, rode to Shrewsbury on it for work and had it WOT the whole way, wasn’t an issue for me or the bike and sat at 75 on the clock the whole way there and back.

1 shouldn’t have been a surprise, single H4 bulb and the dipped beam goes off when the main beam comes on. I’ve tried a led bulb which is better and worse at the same time. Only a couple of months a year when it’s really an issue though, and it’s probably worse than average for me because about 60% of my commute is unlit

Otherwise I think it looks smart, it’s comfy, it costs buttons to insure and pennies to run. Never managed less than 80mpg and I give it some stick.

I might swap it to a Himalayan at some point, because I’ve put a top box on it and it looks gash. But nothing has put me off another Enfield over the last year.

How about a Svartpilen 401 ? Theyre only £4.5k and for a bike to just knock about town and weekend b-roads look fun. Im seriously looking into ditching the 600 xj for one.

seat height is massive compared to a cruiser. and a lot of ppl choose cruisers because of the low seat i imagine.
is certainly my reason for looking at them.

Get with the times man..... Nascent transexuality is the current aspersion to be cast casually at the cruiserist.

I can have a defibrillator at his house in four or five minutes and I am looking for any excuse to put into practice what I've been taught.

Had a sit on a Super Meteor on my lunch brake. Very nice, quality seems a step up on the 350s which are already a step up from the older 650s.

There are no doubt going to be little annoyances (dials are also too bright on mine) but for a leisure bike for cruising around on sunny days it would be really nice.

The power to weight ratio of the 350 Meteors is not good - the equivalent of 20bhp at 190kg was probably being achieved a century ago.

Oh definitely, it’s not impressive on paper or real life. But up to 50mph it’s quick enough, you can properly take liberties with it it’s so docile. It’s just like a 125 but with some guts, because all the action is at such low revs it’s just a nice place to spend time.

If I needed to use motorways regularly it wouldn’t be the bike I’d choose. But for leisure cruising, it’s decent. Old guys on Facebook seem really happy with theirs, I think that’s who it suits best. Older potterers and people who just want cheap transport, but I think the latter are better served by the Hunter now.

i was looking at one in cob and jagger a couple of weeks ago cos my mate was buying a ducati desert x

i didn't know straight away the meteor was a 350 cos it looked so heavy - on the one hand, substantial - on the other, just too much metal when considered in relation to the bhp

there was a ccm spitfire thing in there as well, which looked really good (didn't see the ticket price though!)

CB(F)500(F)

It's low.

It's also the "indestructible" people often mistake 80s UJMs to be.

My Meteor feels a tiny bit faster than my 1980 Suzuki GP100U was but much more torquey, compared to the Bonnie its a lightweight. As far as I can see the headlight is adequate for the speed it can go.

I will be trying out the Meteor 650 when the demo reaches my local RE dealer, maybe as a Bonnie replacement. (sad)

I don't understand the thing with the modern Royal Enfields. They're appealing to people (my dad fancies a Himalayan), in some way that I genuinely cannot fathom. Objectively, it seems, they're not really very good. Everyone says this. Reviewers say it. Owners happily admit that they're not very powerful, and quite heavy, and the brakes are adequate at best, and suspension a bit cheap, and quality is ok.

I keep waiting for the "But!..." where someone explains exactly what it is, that compensates for them being apparently pretty mediocre. But that moment never seems to arrive. Is it literally just that they're new and relatively cheap? If you're at a point where you just want something rubbish to bimble about on, it's not like the biking world is short of options.

I think cheap is the thing really, I’d rather have a Speed Twin than an interceptor, or if I wanted a cruiser I’d rather have a proper one than a meteor or super meteor. But they ride ok, probably better than ok and they are cheap. The classic 350 is probably the most faithful recreation of an old 50s Brit bike but with ABS and a warranty.

But yeah, if I’d have had 10 grand to spend rather than 4 I’d have had a Versys or something. That’s why I had mine, and it certainly isn’t going to be my last bike, but it’s been better than I thought it would be based on the numbers. I’d say worth a test ride, you can have a go on mine if you’re in the midlands

On the RE Himalayan, I think looks have a lot to do with it. Compared with its competition from BMW and Honda its specs are poor but it's like a bike version of the Land Rover 90 Defender unlike a Landie though its cheap. It has a look to it though which its competition doesn't share, the BMW and Honda are very dull looking.

If they were called Gwangchong instead of Royal Enfield, everything else being identical, they'd sell a tenth as many.

Could be said of a lot of marks these days. RE have done a very good job of using the reordering of the company as a marketing tool. Plus western markets are a secondary market to poorer markets.
