Are you implying her partner is a major suspect - and that although he's not been arrested yet, they haven't let him out of their sight and therefore the public is safe? Because if you're not, I don't get how the public isn't potentially at risk.

I'm not actually implying anything specific, I'm just saying that the only people who actually *know* anything significant are the police.

They won't suddenly tell everyone to lock their doors and stay in because it's a massive overreaction, and cause panic? I'd say by-and-large serial killers are not very common, and it's usually a much more mundane explanation. Having people panic is not a good outcome.

I'm not saying they should tell everyone to lock their doors, I'm suggesting that it is potentially rash to rule out third party involvement at this stage, and put all the eggs in the basket marked "river."

They will not look good at all if someone else is attacked and, or, murdered in that area - and it transpires it's the same sociopath. As unlikely as that is, shouldn't the police at least be warning the public to be on their guard - given that their entire case seems to be resting on circumstantial evidence? Or are you going with a "police know best" and "we shouldn't speculate"? If so, I genuinely envy your faith in their ability to deal with such cases. There's no irony or sarcasm in this comment, btw.

Obviously all the attention this case is getting is because she’s an attractive, white, middle class woman. If it was fat Shaniqua from the rough side of town we would all have looked away by now.

Until this thread was started I actually had looked away, regardless that she's an "attractive" white middle class woman.

She had already become "just another" missing/now presumed dead person.

So its not her fault that the only flash of empathy I managed to dredge up was that she is someone's daughter - because I would be devastated if mine were missing in similar circumstances (of course).

There have certainly been circumstances where I have briefly felt sad about bad things happening recently to multicultural women: - one crushed at a concert, several shot whilst at a memorial for 2 others.

My point being that I don't spend time handwringing pointlessly for all dead, injured or missing women (or men) - but that's part of what's wrong with me, rather than the ridiculous way that the media insists on continuing to press everyone into segregational ways of thinking.

Let the police do their job and wait until they have something to show for it.

Or not.
Personally I hope she's done a Reggie Perrin.
Cos that's the kind of thing I could easily understand, would even consider myself.

fwiw I am kind of starting to think a reggie is looking more likely

even if the time-line is only about 80% accurate, it's still tight - and the idea that anyone (be they close relative, partner or lone psycho) would choose to attack, kill, throw in river, murder, chloroform and abduct, etc. etc. a person in that place at that time now strikes me as highly unlikely. This is by all accounts a popular dog walking spot, and the time of day is peak dog walking hour. If you were going to attack / kill someone, this time and place has to almost be top of the list of contexts that you would NOT consider doing that in.

The police are not the people we thought they were in the 80s and 90s. They have terrible corruption problems, vetting problems and institutional bias and prejudice that can't be rinsed out with a single piece of legislation or task force or initiative. However, in order to become a senior police detective one assumes they aren't a total drooling moron and have at least the deductive and analytical abilities that we do, if not moreso with added human experience, strong cynicism of the general public and documented history of this type of case. Yes, I do have a small amount of faith that they know better, not least for the fact that they have the control over the information released, and we just have some rag's rote reprinting of a press release to go on.

We as the public do not have all the facts, we can be sure of that.

You're saying they're not much cop? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Seriously though my professional experiences of the police (with regards to CCTV) is the detectives in the field are pretty clueless. They're looking for simple "we can pin it on this mug" rather than Sherlock Holmes deductions.

Classic example: my hander? would that be the right word? anyway, a detective sergeant was typing up the witness statement (I'd removed the CCTV unit from a night club for analysis back at the station) asked me what the red squiggly lines meant in Microsoft Word Shocked Conversely the non-field agents - desk sergeants and civilian specialists - have all seemed pretty good. Learnt quite a bit from the police IT guys in Manchester that helped my job going forward.

The police were never very good a solving crime in the first place so not really surprising they've moved onto other things.
